Hello <<First Name>>,
And happy New Year! We have a lot of exciting news, events and opportunities coming your way from the month of December.
This Month's newsletter intro was written by AVF Member and Social Media Manager Isha Singh. Here she shares her journey into Vertical Farming and the future of agriculture:
When I first heard about growing crops indoors with artificial LED lighting, I was thirteen – and unconvinced, to say the least. But I was also a member of my local community and cared about inciting change that tackled the needs of my time. Having lived in the same, remote Western Australian town for ten years, I knew how to perceive its weaknesses. We had plentiful water reservoirs, but no fertile land. To develop a secondary industry after the mining boom was over, we needed a solution. On a lark, I gave vertical farming a shot and for a school science project, conducted an experiment.
Granted, my makeshift cardboard boxes in the spare bedroom with red, blue and yellow overhanging light bulbs and Kmart squash seeds were hardly modern technologies’ finest – but they were enough. I was sold. I wrote a research report promoting the feasibility of LED-run agriculture. It set off a chain of events that led me to present my findings in Beijing, and eventually to the AVF.
Here, I became exposed to a vertical farming subculture, a whole new field of human innovation. In doing so, it also guided me to the solutions to topical global problems from environmental degradation to world hunger. As humans, we need to have a greater awareness of our communities and a greater awareness of our abilities. Only then, can we welcome a more noble, peaceful and green future.

Changemaker of the Year Announcement
One of our goals at the AVF is to shine a spotlight on the movers and shakers that are shaping our industry. This publicity is key to help the next generation of growers and entrepreneurs as they make their mark on feeding the world. Over the past year, we interviewed eleven changemakers, connecting the dots between the forces that shape our global economy, the personal circumstances that led them to do what they do, and the tools, and especially the technology that enables them to help us put more food on our tables.
So, we are happy to announce that the winner, the Changemaker of the Year 2016 presented to you by the Association for Vertical Farming is:
Founder and CEO of Agrilyst
We were thrilled to sit down with Allison and hear about the platform she and former Google software engineer, Jason Camp, created in order to bring growers the 'bottom line', aggregating the data necessary to grow and deliver fresh harvested produce more efficiently.
The 2017 AVF Award
The 2016 AVF Award was a huge success. 300+ student lead teams from around the world applied to participate. The teams had to take their project through 5 milestones, which narrowed the field to 28 teams from 24 different countries. The winning team was from Malaysia. That team continues to move vertical farming forward in their region.
We are very excited to take that to the next level in 2017. To do this, we have decided to expand the award into three awards:
a. The Modular Vertical Farming Award
b. The Commercial Vertical Farming Award
c. The Domestic Vertical Farming Award
The sponsorship bidding packet was sent to AVF members in an exclusive members only email and so offers are coming in, yet it is not too late to bid for a sponsorship at the AVF award 2017.
The 2017 Award is due to be on September the 22nd in Washington D.C, So stay tuned and stay engaged, because more exciting news will be heading your way soon!
Also, please feel free to watch the webinar we held for potential sponsorship opportunities earlier in December here.
