As spring sets in and moody April weather slowly disappears, we are getting more and more excited about our upcoming AVF events. Only six weeks until the AVF Summit 2016 and the opening of the GreenTech Vertical Farming pavilion! Both take place at the RAI convention center in Amsterdam. The AVF team is working hard on offering every visitor a unique experience to inspire them about the possibilites of Vertical Farming.

AVF Summit 2016


At this years AVF Summit in Amsterdam we will take a closer look at the application of circular economy principles to Vertical Farming. We are very pleased to present you numerous professionals from the industry and established AVF members who will share their experiences.

Attendees can expect inspiring talks from Dr. Dickson Despommier and Marc Oshima (Aerofarms) about “Closing the Loops with Vertical Farming”,  panel discussions about “The Circular Vertical Farm”, “Advancements in LED” and “Future of Retail” along with case studies on Aquaponics, Mushroom and Insect Farming. Other presenting companies include: Illumitex, Metro, Philips, Architecture & Food, Lateral Thinking Factory, Genome Analysis Center, Urban Farmers, Mycelia, Infarm and also the winners of the “AVF Award” will get a chance to pitch!

First-Ever Vertical Farming Pavilion at GreenTech 2016

For the first time, the bi-annual GreenTech trade show in Amsterdam in collaboration with the AVF will be hosting the new Vertical Farming pavilion. In this separated space in Hall 8, visitors will be able to talk face-to-face with a variety of specialists in Vertical Farming technologies.

Here they will be introduced to the latest innovations in the Vertical Farming industry. Many AVF members are already confirmed as exhibitors in the Vertical Farming pavilion: Urban Crops, Osram, Certhon, Enza, Foody Vertical Towers, Heliospectra, Aponics, Priva. Mumbai Seminar

The AVF is very active in Europe and the USA, but the movement is also gaining traction in the East. The Center for Research in Alternative Farming Technologies (CRAFT) and its partners are organizing a seminar on business opportunities in soilless cultivation on May 7 in Mumbai. Through its partnership with CRAFT, the AVF is actively promoting the sustainable development of Vertical Farming in India. As the AVF, we are proud to invite you to this seminar and learn all about the Indian market and opportunities to secure a whole nations food security.

Wanted: Vertical Farmers for the AVF Whitepaper

Some of you may have heard that the AVF is going to release a whitepaper about the global state of vertical farming at this years AVF Summit. With so many urban and vertical farms popping up across the world, we really want to capture the spirit of modern farmers across the globe with a full page spread of thumbnails of aquaponic, hydroponic, and vertical farmers from our network.

This will be a great way to promote your brand as well! See the example below for what we expect:

AVF co-leading NYC Agricultural Collective

Helping to Bring Policy and Legislation Changes to a NYC Roundtable Discussion.

In early April 2016, the AVF co-led the NYC Agriculture Collective at the invitation only Brooklyn Borough President Office Symposium event; many NYC government agencies were present at the roundtable to discuss the possibilities to change legislation and policy in support  of urban agriculture industry growth. At the event Howard Brin and Henry Gordon-Smith presented respectively on education and the vision for urban agriculture in New York City.

AVF Award Webinars

In the course of the Vertical Farming Award 2016, sponsored by Illumitex, the AVF organised a series of very interesting webinars with experts like Paul Hardej, Kelly Wilson and Rebecca Knight (Illumitex), Edward Silva (Thought for Food) and Jasper den Besten (HAS University). Valoya develops and sells energy efficient LED light systems which are used for plant breeding, the cultivation of edible leafy greens and ornamental plants. Their grow-light products are also applied in research and vertical farms. Valoya is located in Finland and will present their systems at the GreenTech in Amsterdam in June.

The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) is an industry association with branches in Brussels, Belgium, in Paris, France and Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Their goal is both, to develop a strong network between several actors in the European photonics business and act as an accelerator and faciliator for sustainable development, technological and commercial advancement.
Garden Tower Project

The sky is the limit. The Garden Tower Project from Bloomington, Indiana is commited to the transformation of our food system. In order to give more people the possibilty to grow their own vegetables at home, they developed the Garden Towers. Each of them includes its own organic fertilizer production: worm castings compost is located in the middle of the tower in a perforated tube, turning organic household waste into fertile soil for the plants.
