From one great party to a whole season of parties!

The confetti from the MoonPie Over Mobile New Year's Eve festivities is barely swept from the streets, and we're already making preparations for an early Mardi Gras. The first parade is less than three weeks away! But you don't have to wait even that long to begin celebrating -- ArtWalk is this Friday and downtown shops and galleries will be open from 6:00 - 9:00 offering beverages for you to enjoy as you stroll from spot to spot.

Be sure to stop by the Urban Emporium during ArtWalk for our Oyster-Beer fundraiser. Wintzell's will be set up out back with a raw and grilled oyster bar. Tickets are $10.00 and will benefit Springboard to Success, the non-profit that manages the retail incubator. Buy tickets in advance.

RETAIL & RESTAURANT NEWS

Top Alabama Restaurants

Two downtown restaurants made the al.com list for the 15 Hottest New Restaurants of 2015, and so a big congratulations is in order for Von's Bistro and Dumbwaiter Restaurant!

If you haven't checked out both of these new restaurants, you're missing out. You may want to call ahead when you decide to go; it was hard enough to get a table before their appeal was made official.

DEVELOPMENT BUZZ

Brewery Planned for Downtown

The former Goodyear Tire Center on Government Street will soon take on new life as a craft brew pub. John Serda, who owns Serda's Coffee Co. on Royal Street, received a variance from the Board of Adjustment this week that would allow a brewery and cafe operation. The conversion from tire store to brew pub will take some months, but expect to be able to lift a pint of locally brewed beer before the year is out!
Alabama State Council on the Arts Grant

Main Street Mobile was awarded a grant in the amount of $3750.00 for a public art project planned for Cathedral Square. "Equino" is a bronze sculpture currently being created by Casey Downing and will serve as a monument to the Mobile Police Department's Mounted Unit. The Mounted Unit has been an integral part of the overall appeal of downtown, delighting citizens and visitors while adding to the general feeling of safety in our neighborhood. We are still raising money to cast the statue, which also includes a tribute to Lt. Tommy Menton, who patrolled downtown and led the Mounted Unit for many years. If you're interested in contributing, please contact Carol Hunter.
