GULFQUEST AND CHOCOLATE OPEN DOWNTOWN IN SEPTEMBER!

 

September will be a huge month for exciting events in Downtown Mobile. The long-awaited GulfQuest, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, will officially open its doors, and Chocolate! The Exhibition will fill the halls of the Gulf Coast Exploreum with the history and science of the world's favorite treat! Details of both events are below, along with all the other developments and events coming up this month.

RETAIL & RESTAURANT NEWS

Two Restaurants Open, Three More on the Way!

 

Montego's Caribbean Cafe and Bar at 225 Dauphin Street (photo top left) has been serving up island-inspired fare for a couple of weeks now to rave reviews. (Be sure to try the Shrimp Tacos!)

The Admiral Hotel at the corner of Government and Joachim streets is still under renovation, but Corner 251 (photo bottom left) opened this week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lunch/dinner menu features inventive hand crafted sandwiches and small plates. 




The owners of Von's Bistro are also hard at work putting the finishing touches on their new restaurant at 69 St. Michael Street. The popular food truck operators are planning to begin serving up their Asian/Coastal fusion menu downtown bu the end of the week.

The wait is almot over for those of you longing for an Italian restaurant downtown. Pizzeria Delfina will open its doors Saturday, September 12th. The menu features a wide selection pasta dishes, specialty pizzas and dolce!

 Celebrated local chef Chakli Diggs is hard at work on his newest concept, SaiSho, which means "new" in Japanese. It will certainly be a new dining experience for Mobile! Renovations at 455 Dauphin Street are nearing completion, and Diggs is expecting a mid to late fall opening.


 

 

DEVELOPMENT BUZZ

CARNIVAL MAY RETURN TO MOBILE

The Port City could soon be back in the cruise ship business. Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced today the city is in final negotiations with Carnival to add Mobile back to the cruise line's offerings. The contract is expected to be finalized by the end of the month, at which time Carnival officials will be in town to unveil the specifics. 

Downtown hotels, restaurants, retailers and attractions all benefited from the visitors coming to our city to begin their cruise vacations...this news could mean even faster redevelopment of our city center!

The Exchange 202


The Exchange 202 will be the first of two co-working spaces opening in Downtown Mobile in the coming months. The Exchange seeks to Re:Imagine work and is offering office space to freelancers, entrepreneurs, consultants, etc. who might be tired of working out their homes or local coffee shops. The super-cool space is at 202 Government Street and will offer small offices, conference room space and the opportunity to collaborate with other innovators. Fuse Project Co-Working Space


Fuse Project plans to open a nonprofit co-working space at 200 Government Street  in early 2016 thanks to a partnership with The City of Mobile. Up to sixty spaces will be available for local nonprofit organizations with fewer than 5 employees. 
There will be an information session on Monday, September 14 at 5:30pm in the 10th floor conference room of the Mayor's office.

DOWNTOWN MOBILE ALLIANCE ANNUAL MEETING ANNOUNCED
 
Former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy will be the featured speaker for this year's Annual Meeting, set for Thursday, October 15, 2015. Murphy is now a Senior Resident Fellow for Urban Development with the Urban Land Institute. He led the Steel City's revitalization and understands what drives investment and ensures long lasting commitment, and is currently focusing on the public-private partnerships that spur innovation. The luncheon will once again be held at the Battle House Hotel. 

 is this year's title sponsor, and the Alabama State Port Authority is a leadership level sponsor. SPRINGBOARD TO SUCCESS FIRST ANNUAL FIELD DAY

Gather up four friends and enter a team to participate in our adult field day. This fundraiser for Springboard to Success, the non-profit that manages the Urban Emporium, will feature a five event relay: Potato Sack, Wheelbarrow, Egg & Spoon, Water Balloon and Six-legged Races.

STREET RENAMED FOR CARNIVAL GROUP

Mobile city council members Levon Manzie and C.J. Small dedicated a section of North Washington Avenue as MAMGA Drive on Thursday afternoon. The dedicaiton recognizes the accomplishments of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association over the past 70 years. We all know that MAMGA puts on the Mammoth Parade every Mardi Gras, but they've also been more quietly working to improve the lives of young people in the African American community.

GulfQuest Preview Gala

Thrusday, Sept 24th, 6:00 PM
If you want to be among the first to get a sneak peek at Mobile's newest attraction, you'll want to get a ticket to the gala a couple of days before the grand opening. The event features a "christening" of the ship-shaped building, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and tours of the world-class exhibits.

Chocolate! The Exhibition

Sept 26 - Jan 17
Gulf Coast Exploreum

Beginning Saturday, September 26, 2015, the Gulf Coast Exploreum will bring to Mobile  a unique and educational exhibition for young and old alike. Chocolate! The Exhibition explores the rich natural and cultural history of one of the world’s favorite treats, tracing chocolate from its origin in the rainforest to its status as a global economic commodity.
Chocolate! and its national tour were developed by the Field Museum of Chicago and was supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation. Learn more.
To prepare for the exhibit and redesign some galleries, the Exploreum will close Sept. 8 - 15.


 

Wine Taste of Mobile


September 19

A gala event to sample select wines, engage in captivating conversations, a enjoy art, live music and gourmet dishes. Guests are encouraged to mix, mingle, network and make new friends with similar interests. Tickets are on sale now.

Don Moen

September 24

Iconic voice in Christian music and pioneer of the modern praise and worship music movement Don Moen is set to perform in Mobile, AL. Moen, his band, and special guest Lenny LeBlanc will perform a collection of their hit songs such as "God is Good," "God Will Make a Way," and "Above All." Tickets and more info.

The Black Jacket Synphony Presents The Allman Brothers' "Eat A Peach"

 

September 12

The Allman Brothers'  album "Eat A Peach" will be performed in its entirety by select musicians. The concert will be divided into two pieces. The first set is a symphonic recreation of the album, and the second is a laid-back light show of the Allman's greatest hits (also symphonic). Get your tickets now.

Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC) Worlds Of Opportunity

The SAWDC Worlds of Opportunity is a hands-on career expo for 8th grade students in the eight counties of Southwest Alabama. The 5th annual event held in September 2014 hosted 9,700 students, 970 teachers, counselors and parents.

History Museum of Mobile


Just two weeks lefts to explore Ark of India, an exhibit about discovery. It is an account of late 19th and early 20th century India as seen by Alabama artist, Roderick D. MacKenzie, using his paintings, drawings, sculptures, and most importantly, photographs and writings.
