Startup Weekend in Mobile: August 26-28

If you have a great idea for a business, but don't know where to start, then this event is for you! Start Up Weekend is part business pitch competition, part educational experience. The event kicks off on Friday night, when participants from all different walks of life will each be given just 60 seconds to pitch an idea for a business they are interested in starting from scratch.

Only the top ideas will move forward, but participants whose ideas aren’t selected will still be in for an intense weekend. They’ll roll up their sleeves and join one of the advancing teams to compete for prize packages full of resources, such as free legal support, web design and office space, which are meant to help fledgling ventures keep the Startup Weekend momentum going and pursue next steps. Along the way, participants will receive expert feedback and coaching as they learn firsthand what goes into building a new business.

One Mobile is coordinating this exciting opportunity. Visit the
Facebook Page to learn more and to register.
Annual Meeting Plans Announced

Mark your calendars for the Downtown Mobile Alliance Annual Meeting 2016. The perennially sold-out event will take place September 23rd at noon at the Battle House Hotel. Our keynote speaker this year is one of the country's most engaging authorities on how to create vibrant cities. Peter Kageyama is the author of "For the Love of Cities," a book that has spawned a movement to actively engage citizens with the place they call home. The meeting is also an opportunity to review Downtown Mobile's successes and challenges of the past year and layout the agenda for the coming one. The Main Street Mobile award winners will also be announced. If you'd like to learn more about Peter Kageyama and For the Love of Cities, click here.

Invitations for the event will be mailed in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, we would like to recognize the many sponsors who are making this event possible:

RETAIL & RESTAURANT NEWS

Sales Tax Holiday for Back-to-School Items

The merchants of Downtown Mobile are ready to send you off to school in style. Look for sales and special deals throughout downtown this Friday and Saturday. Shop Olensky's Office Supply on Friday for your standard binders, pens and pencils, then head to all our other retailers Friday and Saturday to get your wardrobe ready for fall events.

For a list of all items exempt from sales tax this weekend, click
here.

Discounts for Uniformed Police Officers

The Mediterranean Sandwich Co. is offering a 50% discount for all police officers who come in wearing their uniforms. The discount is good any day and any time the Dauphin Street restaurant is open.

DEVELOPMENT BUZZ
The West Mobile prepared meal service, Balance, that specializes in delicious, nutrient-rich foods (think, paleo-to-go) is opening up a juice bar on Dauphin Street later this month. The new business will be called FOY (Fountain of Youth) and will be selling prepared meals along with a variety of nutritious juices in the storefront at 119 Dauphin Street.

The housing crunch in Downtown Mobile will be eased a bit in the next few weeks as eight luxury apartments come on line. Eight units, six-two bedroom and two-one bedroom, are being created in the historic building known best to Mobilians as the old John Word's restaurant. One of the units at 360 Dauphin Street has already been rented...the others are sure to go quickly. Click here for rental info.
Water Balloon Battle of Mobile Bay

August is full of more events than you might expect, what with the heat and back-to-school activities, but there is one event in particular that's tailor made for the dog days of summer. We'll celebrate the 152nd anniversary of the epic Civil War naval engagement on land instead of the Bay and with water balloons instead of cannons...we might even change the outcome!

The Water Balloon Battle of Mobile Bay will kick off the August ArtWalk on the 12th in Cathedral Square at 5:30 PM. Bring your own fully loaded super-soaker, if you like, and a towel definitely, since you'll want to dry off before heading to the shops, galleries and restaurants open for ArtWalk. We'll provide the water balloons (3000 of them)!
