Spotlight on Social …

ICYMI, here are highlights from WNDB's social media feed and blog!

"ALL Readers Need Diverse Books: Over 1,300 Children's Authors Condemn Book Banning." On purple background with dark bookshelf and "WNDB Takes Action" and #BookBanOpenLetter"Ahead of a congressional hearing on book bans and censorship, WNDB and Christina Soontornvat sent an open letter with the signatures of over 1,300 authors to the House Oversight Committee—but this call to action goes to state legislators and school boards as well.

We stand with these authors and illustrators to call upon legislators and policy-makers to fight back against censorship and protect the rights of young people to access books freely. ALL readers need diverse books. Read more, including the full letter here.

MELISSA book cover by Alex Gino with text "previously published as GEORGE" Rainbow letters on white background

Fighting book bans one challenge at a time. Read how one librarian fought an LGBTQIA+ book challenge of Alex Gino's Melissa  … and won!

"[A] caretaker expressed concerns I had promoted a banned book. They took issue with Melissa’s trans identity because they wanted to talk with their child about “sensitive content.” At the time, four students and one faculty member publicly identified as trans. Claiming Melissa featured sensitive content, and therefore should be removed, was dangerous and hurtful. The complexities of this incident are at the crux of educators’ exhaustion and fear. How do we acknowledge concern while also fiercely advocating for LGBTQ+ students and faculty?"
