News from Vital Statistics for Clergy conducting Weddings:
Red tape and advertising marriage services
We thought it would be interesting for you to hear about this most recent communication from Alberta’s Vital Statistics regarding licenses for clergy to conduct weddings in our province.
As part of the Alberta government’s reducing red-tape initiatives, Vital Statistics informed the Chinook Winds Office on February 10, 2020, that
the licenses for clergy who did not conduct a wedding in 12 months would have their licenses revoked. However, Good News! After a number of concerns were raised with the government agency, Vital Statistics informed us via email on March 3, that it would not proceed with this change.
Vital Statistics also provided this helpful information on advertising to provide weddings services. Acting Executive Director for Vital Statistics Eileen Joly wrote: “I also understand that outreach is a central part of many of your ministries, and it is important to provide couples interested in religious ceremonies with the information they require. As it relates to advertising, clergy who choose to use social media or a website to highlight their religious marriage services are welcome to do so, providing individuals identify themselves as clergy as well as the religious organization to which they belong.”

Please join Lethbridge Churches for the World Day of Prayer, a prayer movement that invites us to enrich our faith experience with Christians from around the world to bring hope to women touched by injustice. This year the service has been written by the women of Zimbabwe. Representatives from twelve different Lethbridge churches will come together to present this service at Southminster United Church, 1011- 4th Ave. S., on Friday, March 6th at 2:00 pm. Refreshments and fellowship to follow. This is an ecumenical service that has been held in Lethbridge for 99 years.

Guidelines for Churches for COVID-19
With flu season upon us and reports of the COVID-19 virus in the news, congregations may be raising questions of how to be prepared. The United Church of Canada has prepared Advisory Sheets on its website that outline good practices. While they were prepared in 2006 and 2009 and require updating for the new structure, the documents remain relevant and helpful.
Specific to congregations are the documents: Are you Ready for a Health Emergency; Breaking the Chain: Guidelines for Reducing the Spread of Infection and Being Faithful during Cold and Flu Season. The latter document offers helpful suggestions for communion and passing the peace.
