Shout out to the Independent Shopkeepers Association and their efforts supporting local retailers this holiday season. You might not know their name, but as the producers of the Holiday Pop-up Shops in Midtown, they spent months planning (and re-planning) a new format for the popular holiday shopping experience.

With a goal to provide a platform for local shops to generate much needed additional revenue in a safe environment for everyone, the Holiday Pop-Ups hosted 35 shops throughout the season with an estimated 5,000 visitors each weekend at the outdoor shopping village. Several participating shops were downtown based, one of which was longtime retailer, The Painted Door. Owner Avis Scaramucci remarked on the event. "Our December sales were the best since 2014, and it was specifically due to our success at the Pop-Ups. Not only were sales robust at the event, but it also encouraged customers to come and shop Painted Door in Bricktown."

The OKC community made a point to shop local this holiday season. Whether it was at the event, in-store or online, shoppers were conscious of buying their gifts from small businesses in 2020, and it made a major difference for local shops. The support of the community and hard work of the shopkeepers combined with adjustments to the event format made for an unexpectedly perfect season.

Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership has sponsored the Holiday Pop-Up Shops in Midtown since its inception and look forward to the opportunity to continue support in the future. While the geodesic domes plan to make a comeback in 2021, we are excited to see how the format continues to evolve in making downtown your favorite destination for shopping local.

Thanks to the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) recent Air Quality Small Grant program, downtown now has 50 new bike racks and 5 new repair stations. The new biking amenities were installed with the help of the city's Office of Sustainability.

ACOG and Downtown OKC split the $25,641.60 project cost. ACOG’s Air Quality Small Grant program, funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Improvement Program, covered 80%. Downtown OKC paid for the rest, and will be responsible for maintaining the bike racks and repair stations throughout downtown districts.

You can see where bike racks and repair stations are located in downtown Oklahoma City, including the new ones, here on this interactive Google map. You can also learn more information about this collaborative project at

The OKC MLK Coalition is dedicated to continuing the celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They will host both an online parade and virtual job fair on Monday, January 18.

The coalition says that the 2021 theme, “Remember, Celebrate, and ACT.” takes on even greater significance this year. They believe that a strong show of unity will demonstrate the significance of this holiday for the entire Oklahoma City community.

More information for each event can be found on the OKC Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Coalition Facebook page

Join the Myriad Gardens on Monday, January 18, to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Walk their outdoor grounds and discover notable and inspiring quotes by Dr. King along the way. While visiting, reflect upon the challenges of the past year as well as what brings you hope despite challenging times and add your own thoughts of remembrance, hope, and action to the MLK Day Reflection Board in the Visitor Center. You may also view the newly installed art exhibition, Still Here: The Cosmology of Black Resilience

Cafe Disco is a French macaron shop in downtown OKC where we offer 12 different macaron flavors and a full coffee and tea menu. I am a self-taught baker who opened Cafe Disco in hopes of creating an environment that was full of kindness, inclusiveness and provides a sense of care and joy throughout your experience with us. We are always creating new flavors monthly (this month’s flavors are Fig & Goat Cheese and Butterscotch) and we love doing custom orders for weddings, birthdays or any occasion you might have.

My favorite place to shop is The Social Club, especially when I am gift shopping. The items they stock are just so lovely - most of them being local and/or handmade. Attached to the shop is their salon and this is where I get my hair done (ask for McKenzie she is the very best) and purchase most all of my hair products from.

My favorite place to eat in the Arts District is Bar Arbolada when they offer their “smashed" burgers and fries. It is my favorite burger in OKC! If it's nice outside, I love to walk over and grab a burger and drink while enjoying their outdoor patio or I’ll grab it to-go and snag a bottle of wine to take home.

When I am celebrating an occasion or just looking to relax with friends, I love to go to The Jones Assembly. They have the most beautiful patios and the most inventive cocktail list around. My current favorite cocktail is the “Felt Cute” but you seriously can’t go wrong with any of them! This is also where I’ve seen many great shows and look forward to doing this again in the future.
