CELEBRATING JUNE EVENTS + QUEER COMMUNITY LEADERS

Throughout the month of June, we'll be celebrating organizations, events, and leaders that are making an impact in our community. Follow along each week as we shine a spotlight on individuals who are striving to make Oklahoma City a welcoming and inclusive place for all people.
DEADCENTER FILM FESTISTIVAL
 L A R O N  C H A P M A N

My name is Laron Chapman and I am a local freelance filmmaker and screenwriter, occasional actor, producer, Rodeo Cinema board member, and most recently, appointed deadCenter Film’s Curator of Queer Programming. Our Festival kicks off this Thursday, June 10, and will run through Sunday, June 20.
My mission with each of these roles is to be an authentic, inclusive, and positive voice for marginalized communities and shine a light on our struggles, triumphs, and objectives for our personal, professional, and creative lives. One of my core goals is to increase “positive” minority representation in the creative and professional apparatus and to dismantle the negative myths about our abilities.

I love to go for walks through the Myriad Gardens. It’s not exactly “play” but it is a peaceful, beautiful, and fun place to gather for any occasion.

What encourages you to be a community leader?
I see the tremendous potential in my colleagues and my respective community members. I want to be a small part of the reason they are able to thrive and bring their gifts and talents to the state and the masses. I think my calling is to lead by example and lend a helping hand along the way.

What is one thing that makes you proud to be a part of the downtown Oklahoma City community?
It makes me proud to see how much growth there has been from infrastructure to innovative job opportunities, and the strong presence of the arts weaved into OKC’s diversifying culture.

How can people get involved with your organization or mission?
They can support local businesses, attend local film festivals, and participate/volunteer in community events to help build our state’s vitality and viability for others.
