The Downtown Developers’ Connection is in ONE WEEK. Taking place next Wednesday, March 24 at 10am, this interactive webinar event will explore how the pandemic has affected employers’ and employees’ views on work flexibility and the purpose of the office, and if that should have long-lasting effects on how we build, manage, and promote our downtown workspaces.

The cost to attend is $20 per person, be sure to get your tickets now, and encourage your friends and coworkers to do the same.

In an effort to debunk the myths around poverty and those who are plagued by it, the team at City Care has created an FAQ video series to address these types of questions.

City Care inspires those willing to look at social injustice and extreme poverty in the face and empowers them to do whatever it takes to create change. Through homeless services, permanent supportive housing, and character-based and literacy-focused tutoring, they witness remarkable stories of transformation.

Robinson Park is hosting a community give-back effort for their employees next Friday, March 26. They'll be traveling around downtown to pick up trash and litter. If you see them strolling around with a mask on and trash bags in their hands, be sure to say thanks for helping keep our downtown clean.
We're celebrating the many women who continue to contribute to downtown. By owning businesses and being an empowering force in the community, they inspire women throughout Oklahoma City and beyond. This month in our Local Spotlight, we will specifically feature women-owned businesses and community leaders. We encourage you to show them your support throughout the month of March, and all year round.

My name is Joi Slemp and I am the owner of The Creative Academy located on Film Row in the Arts District. With The Creative Academy, we are able to introduce little ones to the arts in a safe, nurturing environment. We believe in creating opportunities for students to explore the arts in their every day by experiencing daily activities that include art, music, theater, and stories.
In addition to being a wife and mom, I curate routine bookkeeping and accounting services for small businesses and organizations. My specialty is working with startups and creative entrepreneurs. I love the creative side of business and working with others to foster creativity in the community. Our family owns several businesses, and they all began from the desire to create a sustainable ecosystem for creative entrepreneurs to grow and prosper. Why downtown? Honestly, most days it feels like downtown chose us. Doors opened for us to get involved in the downtown entrepreneurial community and we walked through them.

I always love stopping by Plant Shoppe. It's the perfect place to pick up a gift for a client or a hand-tied bouquet.

If I make a stop at Plant Shoppe, then I also have to swing by Stitch Cafe. Their food and beverages are so tasty, but the team is what never fails to brighten up every day.

West Village is my favorite place to play. It has an aesthetic that is unmatched. I love their pools and grills, it's the perfect place to hang out with family in the summertime!

For so long, I thought that maybe I needed to choose between being a mom and owning a business. My hope is that our family-owned business encourages other women that it’s possible to pursue both. With the right combination of community support, wisdom, and risk, the opportunities are endless for women to make a positive impact in their communities through entrepreneurship.
