Preparing for the Future

Happy New Year! Looking ahead at 2019 and beyond, the Board of Directors and I are optimistic about the direction and strength of Villa Therese Catholic Clinic. This newsletter is packed with good news, outcomes, and announcements.

Because the clinic is a member of The National Associate of Free & Charitable Clinics, we are working towards achieving a quality standards accreditation awarded by NAFC. There are seven quality standards each with multiple levels of criteria. The NAFC will award a Bronze, Silver or Gold Seal depending on how successfully a clinic has incorporated these standards within their organization. We continue to take advantage of the NAFC's member benefits ranging from grant opportunities and donation programs to technology partners and educational resources.

Electronic medical records (EMR) have been implemented and we are learning to utilize more of its reporting capability to track patient visits and other outcomes. AthenaGives, a program of athenaHealth has given the web-based EMR program to VTCC at no cost. Athenahealth is one of the technology partners with NAFC and made available to us with our membership in NAFC.

In 2018 we held three Healthy Sundays, off-site screening clinics at San Isidro, St. Anne's, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Del Valle de Pojoaque.  At total of 97 patients were seen with 59 patients having follow-up appointments at the clinic. On January 23, 2019 we held an off-site screening for the Santa Fe Public Schools Adelante Program. The  Adelante Program provides services for children, teens, and their families experiencing homelessness in Santa Fe. We saw 14 patients on the 23rd and scheduled 14 follow-up appointments at the clinic.

The next scheduled off-site clinic is at the Lunch Kitchen at St. John the Baptist on Tuesday, February 12, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. We will also be returning to the Adelante Program on February 27. Additional screening clinics are being planned for 2019. These off-site clinics are funded by a grant from the CHRISTUS Fund.

Finally, we'd like to congratulate Fabiola Guillen who was chosen in late 2018 for Ten Who Made a Difference. For more than three decades The New Mexican has been honoring people in Santa Fe and across Northern New Mexico who dedicate their time to volunteer service recognizing those who help make our local communities stronger. Fabiola has volunteered at Pack-2-School giving our students a fresh haircut for the first day of school. Congratulations, Fabiola!

All the best for you -- and VTCC -- in 2019!

News from the Board of Directors

Focusing on VTCC's Future

2019 will prove to be a busy year for the Board. Planning progresses on the move to Hopewell Street and we continue to support the clinic's Executive Director, Victoria Otero, the staff and the volunteer providers in our mission of providing free health care to the community.

BOD officers this year are: Archbishop John C. Wester, President; Ron Aldrich, Chair; Kathy Armijo-Etre, Vice-Chair; Debra Beeson, Corporate Secretary; Tendai Shereni, Treasurer; Peter Bastone, Member-at-Large. Other board members include Father Larry Brito, Wade Carlson, Rafael Garabis, Emelda Martinez, Mary Jo Metzger, Aamna Nayyar, and Steve Turner. In addition to the six standing board committees (Executive, Finance, Community Relations & Development, Governance, Personnel, Quality Assurance) there are two Ad Hoc committees: Business Plan & Facilities Development and Clinical Practice & Scope of Services.

At the November meeting of the Board of Directors, Jim Coogan and Cynthia Lackner were voted in as emeritus members of the Board of Directors. The board had announced Jim's and Cynthia's resignations in the last newsletter. We are grateful for their many years of service.
