From the Executive Director

Hello! Hola!

I am honored to lead Villa Therese Catholic Clinic into a new era of its 78 year history.  When I first learned of VTCC’s mission to give free basic health and dental care to the underserved and underinsured it struck me as exceptional. Now that I have been here since March, I know it is exceptional! It is the only free health clinic in Northern New Mexico which makes it truly a gem in our community. Along with the Board of Directors, I will be a good steward of the clinic's resources and continue the rich legacy that has been entrusted to us.

It is especially touching to be working with staff, volunteer medical and dental providers, board members and community volunteers who so willingly give of their time in such a heart-felt way. I would like to particularly thank Board members Cynthia Lackner, Meryl Chaney, and former board member Teresa Sosinski for running the clinic during the interim period before I was hired. They did a wonderful job keeping everything flowing and I am very appreciative of all of their continued help and encouragement.

I wish to thank Ramona Anaya, Mary Neparko, RPh, Dr. Patricio Larragoite and Dr. Daniel Meehan for their contributions to Villa Therese!  Ramona returned to the clinic at a time when her help was especially needed. Patients and volunteer medical providers alike valued her nursing care and compassion. Mary Neparko has been the Pharmacy Director since 2004 volunteering her time and expertise keeping the clinic in compliance. Dr. Larragoite has provided dental services to children and adults this past year. And, for over 38 years, Dr. Meehan has volunteered to provide dental services and extractions at the dental clinic -- a service that has been invaluable for our adult patients. The devotion to patient care each of them shared while here at Villa Therese Catholic Clinic is appreciated and valued.

Hopefully, you have noticed the updated look to our marketing. This new e-newsletter, a redesigned website and updated print brochures with a new logo and tagline will help us reach, not only our supporters, but patients who can can benefit from our services. We are grateful to Julie Ruth of Loka Creative here in Santa Fe for her design work, marketing advice and calm hand-holding while we developed the plans and learned new technology -- new technology for us, that is!

Please don't forget to visit our new website! And, if you are in downtown Santa Fe, we would love to have you stop by the clinic to see the good works we are doing helping every family thrive by providing basic health and dental care to those in need.

Warmly,
Michele

Pack-2-School 2015

Serving over 130 children and their families

The Pack-2-School Program just finished its 19th year by serving over 130 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade from 22 local schools including Santa Nino Regional Catholic School. These students and their families are so grateful for your generosity. The Pack-2-School committee used your donations to purchase backpacks, grade-appropriate school supplies (through Staples store here in Santa Fe) and a gift card to WalMart for school clothes. The Clinic collaborated again with the Rotary Club Santa Fe Del Sur Foundation in its Shoes for Kids program. This year, Shoes for Kids provided fifty certificates which were given to students in kindergarten through 4th grade to be redeemed at PayLess Shoe Source for a pair of shoes and package of socks.

Backpacks were picked up on July 30 and it was a fun, family event. Hairstylists (Desiree Garcia, Fabiola Guillen, Ben Krieger and Gretchen Paffendorf) volunteered their time and gave "back-to-school" haircuts for the families and healthy snacks were served. Teen volunteers had made a bilingual "tip" sheet on how to have a good school year and talked to the students about the importance of working hard and reading.

Thank you to volunteers who helped order supplies, stuff the backpacks and distribute them to the students: Tessie Anchondo, Debra Arias & AnaLicia, Ellie Blossom, Lisa,Bonney, Liz & Todd Braun, JoAnn Brennan, Fran Day, Belinda Ferrara, Dolores & Ric Gonzales, Becky Herrera, Cynthia Lackner, Sandy Levine, Bella Lucero, Therese Martinez, Gillian McMahon, Gabriel McMahon, Eleanor Montoya, Lisa Montoya, Olivia Newfield, Darlene Otero, Victoria Otero, Tre Panagos, Linda Rodriguez, Mary Ann Sanchez, Donna Sanchez, Mario (manager at Staples), Adriana Vargas, and Edwina Wood. Some of these volunteers are also associated with Treasures of Wisdom and Santa Fe Civitan; we are thankful for the support of these organizations! And, a special thank you to the clinic staff, especially Cathy Catanach, for handling the application process with the families.

Fundraising Updates

Spring fundraisers net  over $12,000 for clinic services

Profits from the two spring fundraisers went directly to fund patient services at Villa Therese Catholic Clinic. Our network of volunteer professional medical and dental providers helps to accomplish our mission of serving those who may go untreated with quality care at no cost, but funds are needed to "keep the doors open."

Zumbathon Charity Event

For its first time as a VTCC fundraiser, Give Health! A Zumbathon Charity Event, raised $4,100 through its ticket sales, silent auction and the sponsorships of Southwest CARE Center; Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center; Breast Specialty Care ~ Susan Seedman, MD and Mary Ray Cate, MD; Genoveva Chavez Community Center and the City of Santa Fe.

The theme, Give Health! illustrated our mission to provide health care for those in need while at the same time promoted getting fit ourselves. Take a look at pictures from the event  and you'll see how much fun it was.  Make sure you join us next year and get your cha-cha on!

Thank you to the Zumbathon Committee -- you know how to throw a party and raise much needed funds! Thanks to: Cindy Coulter, Kim Bear, Vicki Hunt, Liz and Todd Braun, and Teresa Sosinski.

Geranium Sale 2015

Spring would not be the same without the geraniums! After 24 years, these gorgeous flowers practically sell themselves. This year's sale raised almost $8,500 -- and every penny helps patients who might not otherwise receive care. Thank you to the geranium committee and volunteers: Cynthia Lackner, Michele Tuohey, Teresa Sosinski, Bruce Tassin, Jim Coogan, Meryl Chaney, Liz and Todd Braun, Carole Cristiano, Karen and Bill Gahr, Lori Stonecipher, Lynn Cheek, Therese Martinez, Olivia and Steve Newfield, Ellie Blossom and many others who sorted and sold geraniums!
