From the Executive Director

April and May News for our supporters

We've been busy at Villa Therese Catholic Clinic this spring and therefore we're combining April's and May's newsletters into one. In addition to offering medical and dental clinics for those in need in our community, there's been the second annual Zumbathon Charity Event and the 25th annual geranium sale! Raising funds is an integral part of our efforts so that we can continue to offer free services to children and families. We appreciate your support whether that is with your pocketbook, your volunteer time or your prayers. Please read the articles below for more information on these fundraisers.

Thank you to Patricia Peck, DDS, a pediatric dental specialist in Santa Fe and a volunteer at our dental clinic. Dr. Peck generously paid for the replacement of the control pad for the clinic's dental chair. The original control pad, which operates the vertical movement of the dental chair, was broken and made it difficult for the volunteer dentists and clinic staff to comfortably care for the patients. Thank you so much, Dr. Peck!

Tune your radio to AM810, KSWV Que Suave Radio! With grant money from Con Alma Health Foundation and the American Dental Association's Samuel D. Harris Fund, Villa Therese Catholic Clinic is running commercials advertising its services to the Hispanic community who are economically challenged and need access to health and dental care. Twenty 60-second commercials and twenty 15-second promotions will air each month through October. The funds from Con Alma Small Grant are specifically to market health services to the underserved Hispanic community and the ADA's funding supports our efforts to promote oral health.

I am so thrilled to let you know that Sr. Pat, former VTCC Executive Director, will be volunteering from Ohio as our new Donor Development Assistant! Our friendship and her love for the clinic mean a lot to me and I am very grateful for the long-lasting impact she has made, and continues to make, on our clinic.

Finally, we'd like to remember in our prayers, Tillie Garcia, a long-time clinic volunteer who passed away this spring. Besides helping with receptionist duties and mailings, Tillie served on the clinic's advisory board. We extend our sympathies to her husband, Casey, and the rest of the Garcia family.

Sincerely,
Michele

P.S. Please don't forget to support our Pack-2-School Program! You can mail a check to the clinic or donate through our website. Indicate that your donation is for Pack-2-School. Thank you for your support!

Hola, mi Amigos y Amigas!

I wanted to share with you that from here in Ohio I’ll be “traveling” through emails and the US Postal Service to my New Mexico Heartland to greet, challenge and thank you from the bottom of my heart as you continue to support the outreach of our VILLA THERESE CATHOLIC CLINIC in serving God's needy ones...the POOR.  I'm now on the roster of a vital group:  VTCC's VOLUNTEERS and I will be serving as a “Donor Development Assistant"!

All through the history of VTCC there has been a very meager Staff (2 or 3 or 4...)  along with 70++ generous Primary Care Practitioners, Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Ophthalmologists. Opticians, Orthodontists, Pharmacists, Podiatrist, Nurses, Receptionists, Computer gurus, BOARD MEMBERS, Advisors...an awesome generous group, to say the least!!!  I remember my deep gratitude when I served as Executive Director to this Group, along with VTCC's most valuable and indispensable BENEFACTORS!!!    I've continued with this thankfulness during these past twelve years "far away", as I kept aware of clinic news via the newsletter, my Emeritus Board Membership, visits to Santa Fe, etc.  Now in my new role as Donor Development Assistant, I will continue in gratitude, commitment and the occasional "begging”!

Bendiciones!
Sr. Pat – as always!

News from VTCC Board of Directors

Villa Therese Catholic Clinic is very grateful to Father Adam Ortega y Ortiz for his counsel during the two years of his service on the board of directors. Father submitted his resignation in April. His responsibilities as rector of the Cathedral Basilica are demanding more of his time.

The Board also welcomes two new members: Jennifer Baird and Steve Turner.

After interning at various departments at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center through its management intern program, Jennifer is now the finance manager for the CSV Medical Group. She works collaboratively with the CFO, executive director and president to provide effective financial leadership and management of the group.

Steve Turner is the president/broker of Margo Ship LLC, a ship broker negotiating shipments between ship owners and cargo companies. “It is an honor and privilege to be appointed to the Board of Villa Therese Catholic Clinic," Steve said.  "I look forward to contributing to the spiritual and community mission of the invaluable services the clinic has provided for the past 79 years.”

A Special Easter Tradition!

National Junior Honor Society at SMH brings Easter Baskets

It's been a sweet tradition for the National Junior Honor Society at St. Michael's High School to bring Easter baskets filled with candy and small toys or stuffed animals to the clinic. Then, staff have fun playing "Easter Bunny" and giving Easter baskets to children with medical or dental appointments at the clinic.

Robyn Serge, faculty moderator of the National Junior Honor Society, said members of the National Junior Honor Society sought donations from the St. Michael's High School community and then assembled the Easter baskets and delivered them to the clinic. This year the NJHS assembled 75 Easter baskets for VTCC!

Below left, are members of the Honor Society with some of the assembled Easter baskets. Karen Manduchi, VTCC dental hygienist and Virgie Lovato, dental assistant, give Easter baskets to a family in the right picture below.

Zumbathon Charity Event for Villa Therese Clinic

Second Annual Zumbathon Raises over $4,000!

You don't have to convince the people who came to Chavez Community Center to exercise at the Zumbathon that dancing is fun AND has great health benefits. Frequent Zumba Fitness participants and those new to the experience found they got a great workout while having lots of fun during the two hours on April 15. Benefits from Zumba are both physical and mental. Many dance just to feel great, relieve stress and get heart rates going, but there are positive effects on long-term health, too!

Over 100 people were at this year's Zumbathon and some participated in the blood pressure screenings offered by a nursing class from the Santa Fe Community College. Also at this mini-health fair, students discussed desired exercise goals as part of a healthy lifestyle. Recipes for Date & Almond Bars and Easy Energy Balls were also available.

At 5:30, everyone was ready for the "main" event! Cindy Coulter and Kim Bear, the hosts for the Zumbathon, enthusiastically told the crowd how the entry fee and the purchase of raffle tickets supported the good works of Villa Therese Catholic Clinic. Besides Cindy and Kim, other instructors included Star Vigil-Lujan, Carlos Martinez, Martha Abeyta, Kristin Chancellor, and Cassandra Delgado. Take a look here for fun photos at the event!

The Zumbathon Charity Event was sponsored by Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, Southwest CARE Center, and Evalinda Walrack, Senior Vice President of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, and the City of Santa Fe.
