Open the Window to your Heart 

Writers, let new life flow through your curtains and carry your creative words to places unknown.

If I want my words to have life and make a difference, I must stop, listen to the Lord, let Him prepare my heart, and wait for His message. Sounds easy, but it's not.

As I stare at a deadline, His message doesn’t come according to my schedule. I wait. I invite Him in, then I wait some more. His words, on the breath of the Holy Spirit, fall upon my fleshly heart, my words become spirit and live in me.

In 1990, I painted a 24X30 oil on canvas with ten vignettes of windows of all shapes, sizes and designs. One window was framed by turquoise shutters opened with lace curtains caught in the breeze. Another image depicted a dark room behind closed drapes locked tight in fear.

Another window, set behind bars, hiding a resident inside seized in fear of being robbed by the outside world. On the sill of a half-opened window sat a ceramic plate of seeds ready to feed landing birds. A red germanium clay pot inside a closed window represented an unshared creative gift.

What is your story? Are you a writer who peeks out of drape-covered windows and closes the drapes again? Bars of fear entrapping you by worry or embarrassment of what the world might think. Or are you a writer who opens the window, turns her heart to heaven, and invites the white dove to carry her words on His wings to a hungry world?

Only those who live behind the windows in their confined space know their true story.

My absentee mother tries to run my life from Texas and wants to marry me off to some social debutant. Under the strict hand of a Bible thumping grandmother, I’ve learned about God. 

The family is anxious I find a girl of good stock, someone who knows how to shoot, roundup cattle, and drive a tractor.

I know what I want. I am my own man.
