'Alpine tarns- the Labyrinth', oil on board, 91 x 91cm, photography by Felicity Jenkins
Dear art lovers, family and friends,
As many of you know I was accepted as an artist in residence at an amazing organisation called "Moriumius' in Japan late last year. I was there for one month, which I realised was too short to create anything substantial. However in my ensuing melt down I had a painting process breakthrough so am very excited about the direction my work has taken since coming home to Australia.
The works in this exhibition are based on my residency in Japan and also the landscape of the alpine wilderness in Tasmania which I was working on before I left for Japan. Funnily enough there is a parallel between Japan and Tasmania with the forest and mountains going to the sea, the alpine trees and the distant misty views of hills and islands.
Before now, much of my work has been done 'en plein air' or directly from nature. Now my work is one step removed working from sketches done in nature, back in the studio. Due to this change in process my works have become more layered, being able to allow for oil drying time, more abstract as I'm not only working from sketches but also observational and emotional memory of place. The work has become just as much about the paint, non literal colour, the drawn line and the emotional response to land as the literal subject matter.
I'm looking forward to seeing this new body of work in Galley 371 in Enmore/Marrickville so I hope you can join me. There is plenty of parking alongside Enmore park, opposite the gallery. There is also a bus stop directly outside the gallery which goes to the city.
I can't wait to have a bevvy with you all, so hope to see you there on opening night Friday 15th, June from 6-8pm, 2018.
All welcome and family friendly. The front door has a small step for anyone in a wheel chair.
