Do you know all you need to know about Geocoding?

Geocoding is a process that translates common data, such as addresses, to produce very accurate maps. Geocoding can be applied to a variety of applications, including locating potential business customers, identifying crime scenes, discovering utility services, and detecting illegal dumping sites. Further, because of the prevalence of addresses and the ease of development and operation, geocoding is cost effective and used by most government agencies, and many businesses, making it a valuable skill to add to your résumé.

This in-depth, hands-on course will teach students how to use ArcGIS software to produce spatial representations or maps using geocoding. Students will learn to create and refine data to develop the reference necessary to build several types of locators (also known as address indexes). They will learn how to re-match errant addresses, standardize addresses, and reverse geo-code. Additionally, they will learn to apply business and customer addresses to the locators and build location maps. In addition to ArcGIS software, students will be using ArcGIS Online and Google Maps processes to provide practical comparisons.

It is a three day course at UC Davis. For more information see:

Starting next month, our Mappy Hours will be switching gears. In response to community feedback, these will now have a more casual focus on networking/socializing over our shared love of GIS/geography. We plan to still organize HOTOSM Mapathons, perhaps biannually or in response to GISCorps volunteer requests. We hope that this change will help make our Mappy Hours all the more inviting to the larger community of GIS professionals, geography lovers, and friends. Hope to see you at the next one, 5/21!
