The Master Gardener Program is a nationwide volunteer program that provides educational programs on horticulture topics.  Throughout NYS, Master Gardeners are trained by CCE in the science and art of gardening. They then go on to provide home and community gardeners with unbiased, research based gardening information through a “neighbors-teaching-neighbors” educational program.  We have a very active Master Gardener program in Genesee County with over 80 active volunteers who donate their time and talent to CCE and the Community.  The Master Gardener program is a valuable asset for Genesee County residents, providing research based knowledge as an unbiased source of information to the community at large, and enhancing the quality of life for all.

Report Spotted Laternfly Egg Masses this Winter
New York State could use your help to watch for and report signs of the invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF). This time of year, be on the lookout for SLF egg masses. Freezing temperatures will kill off adult insects, but the egg masses they lay in the fall can be seen throughout the winter. Egg masses tend to be about 1.5 inches long and resemble mud that has dried and cracked. They can be found on just about any flat surface, including vehicles, firewood, outdoor furniture, etc.
If you believe you have found a SLF egg mass, take a photo and note the location. Then report it to the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets by filling out their online reporting form. Together, we can slow the spread of SLF and catch new infestations early.
