Technology events in Asheville, NC for October 2019

It is another packed month of exciting tech events around Asheville and WNC, including:

  • Code for Asheville's first ever "Solution Saturday," in cooperation with the Buncombe County Library System. This will include a workshop on internet basics and one-on-one sessions. They'll also be accepting technology donations for refurbishment and subsequent distribution (details below).

  • The return of the RETR3AT cybersecurity conference at Montreat College, happening this weekend. Details here.

  • A beginner-friendly introduction to blockchain technology, hosted by Tech Talent South (details below).

Looking ahead to next month, it is time for another Hatch This! hackathon, taking place Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3. More information and tickets available here.

Hypermedia Links in REST APIs (HATEOAS)

Johnathon Wright presents on the advantages of HATEOAS, the fourth constraint of Roy Fielding's ReST-ful interfaces. Although it has been around for decades, most people have never seen an example of it in production, or even in theory. We'll look at using ref tags, resource links, self-navigable APIs, and other mind-expanding stuff. Please join us at the Bier Garden afterward for food and drink.

In this beginner-friendly, introductory presentation on the blockchain, we will discuss what a blockchain is, what problem it solves, and the many ways it can be used. Extending far beyond financial applications, blockchains will disrupt the medical industry, the legal field, supply chain management, cybersecurity, deed management, identity, and governance. In this meetup, we will discuss these many applications and more!

Code for Asheville

Saturday, October 5 - 11 AM to 4 PM

Solution Saturday

Code for Asheville and Buncombe County Public Libraries are putting on our first Solution Saturday. There will be one-on-one sessions, with tech-savvy volunteers, for walk-ins who have questions about how to use the internet. At 1 p.m. Alyx Perry of Code for Asheville will give a workshop on Internet basics including logging in to WiFi at the library, using email, and printing. And we will be accepting donations of unused desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones, re-purposing them with folks that need them. Come and support people-helping-people at our libraries!
