Local Businesses Working on Willamette Water Supply Program

The Willamette Water Supply Program continues to stimulate the local economy through area businesses. Salem-based Emery & Sons Construction Group and Woodburn-based Kerr Contractors Inc. are the most recent Northwest businesses hired by the Supply Program after a comprehensive procurement process. According to Program Manager, David Kraska, “The Kinsman Road opportunity project continues to help control program costs. Partnering with the ODOT/City of Wilsonville’s Kinsman Road project is less expensive and less impactful to the community than going it alone. Furthermore, the competitive marketplace provided a bid that is right in line with our estimates, and the winning contractor is based in the Pacific Northwest making this a win-win for the region.”

Previously, Kerr Contractors Inc. was awarded work for Washington County’s 124th Avenue Extension Project that began in March. This partnership project includes installing a portion of the WWSP pipeline underneath the road as it is built. Pipe for this project is being produced by Northwest Pipe Company, based in the Portland area. Local production of the large-diameter pipe will save the Project and ratepayers in trucking costs, and benefits the local economy.

Many other Program components will continue to need support from private sector companies, and the Program is working with local Chambers of Commerce and other organizations to ensure that local companies are aware of Program needs for a variety of services. Being Oregon’s largest drinking water project, the Program will offer opportunities for businesses both big and small, helping support a strong regional economy through project completion in 2026, and beyond.

Program Update Highlights

Community Outreach — Willamette Water Supply Program staff continue to reach out to more than 300 property owners along the proposed pipeline route as the team works to complete wetland, geotechnical, and other environmental studies on properties that may be needed for construction staging or placement of infrastructure. Water supply staff are working closely with these stakeholders, taking time to discuss the work and meeting in person to let them know about the Program and the survey work that is needed to better understand the conditions along the proposed pipeline route.

124th Avenue Partnership Project — Work continues on this partnership opportunity project with Washington County. Installation of the pipeline portion of the project is anticipated to begin this summer, with pipe delivery expected in July from local manufacturer Northwest Pipe. Visit the project’s website at http://124thproject.com/ for updates and information.

Kinsman Road Partnership Project — Early planning has begun on this recently awarded cost-saving opportunity project with the City of Wilsonville and ODOT. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer and conclude in 2017.
