5 Key traits that will make you attractive to any employer — “Demonstrate drive …”

We are already at the last one of the 5 traits that will make you attractive to any employer. Next to “Being you”, “Being a warrior” and “Being genuinely interested in people”, “Effectively deal with ambiguity”, the drive and energy that you demonstrate during the selection process will be one of the distinguishing factors in determining whether you are a good candidate or a great one.

When you are upbeat and energetic, the people around you will feel it. It has a positive effect on your environment and on the outcomes you hope to create. No wonder that future employers will be attracted by this.

It is hard to determine someone’s level of energy with an interview question. Indicators of drive are much more behavioral oriented. It ranges from the way you walk into the room to the engagement in the conversation. Your body language, your words and mannerism will reveal within seconds the depth of your energy level. They should be reflective of both your natural personality and the position you are interviewing for.

Demonstrating this ‘energy edge’ is not always easy. Introverts are often uncomfortable about displaying enthusiasm. Or you might be unemployed for several months, resulting into you not feeling all that enthusiastic. Yet, there are a few simple tricks that can help you.

The good thing about displaying drive is that it is something intentional. You can become a more energetic leader by becoming more aware and intentional about developing it. It can even start by simply acting more energetic. You’d be surprised as to how your emotions will follow your body.

Another trick is to start with a smile. It sounds simple but smiling will set the mood for the interview. Smiling increases likability and shows a positive, confident energy.

And a final one…dress for success. It will boost your confidence and will shine through in your body language, your hand shake and your confidence throughout the conversation.

This is the end of my series about key traits that make you attractive as a candidate. These 5 are by far not the only ones that will make you successful. I could write a whole year about how integrity, professionalism, … are determining factors in a selection process. But mastering and actively focusing on these 5 traits will significantly increase your chances of landing your dream job.

All that remains is wishing you a wonderful summer. I’ll be on a blogging break, but I hope to welcome you back in my wonder world of headhunting as of September.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Isabel
