My last blog was all about the first trait that would make you attractive as a candidate to any employer: “Be you”. Today is about the second characteristic that distinguishes the great candidates from the good ones: “Be a warrior”.
And no, I don’t mean that you need to fight your way to the top. Being a warrior is all about your mindset to switch gears, to see things differently and to seize opportunities.
True warriors will focus and adapt to situations. While most people get distracted by the obstacles, setbacks and defeats they face, the resilient ones have their eye focused on the end goal, they will harness the negative into positive and will continue to move forward without hesitation. They don’t get distracted or defeated by adversity instead they learn how to manoeuvre through it.
Resilience is about the way that you display professionalism, emotional stamina and courage during the most trying times. A professional with true grit will be able to remain composed and focused on the intended goals.
It is obvious that in today’s age of constant disruption and uncertainty, a workforce that demonstrates resilience becomes a major success factor in an organization’s ability to thrive.
The good thing is, that resilience is not something you are born with. It is a skill that you acquire through the way you deal with everyday setbacks. You can go one way and see failure as a sign that you are not capable of doing anything right. You can also approach stressful events in your life with a positive mindset and see failures as a temporary setback you can recover from quickly. Practicing a positive outlook on adversity will allow you to develop resilience over time.
The other characteristics that define resilient people, such as confidence and calmness, a willingness to ask for help and persistence and determination, can be developed throughout your career. Look for leaders who own those traits, learn from them and apply similar behaviour in challenging situations.
It is easy to excel in good times. What truly makes you stand out from the crowd, is the way you deal with failure, roadblocks and things that are not going the way you want them to go.
