2017 Trade Fair / Show edition

December 5, 2016

Dear EGB Members,

this is the first step to a comprehensive trade fair and show overview that I would like to build for our community. I've spent quite some time this year connecting with and in discussions with show organizers, with the two goals: to support and develop conducive platforms to gain more public exposure for the handbuilt (boutique) guitar as well as try to negotiate good conditions for our members. Below an overview of current information. You can also find all this information on the EGB Forum (see links in the individual posts below). I am sure everyone will appreciate your feedback to or advice about shows you have attended!

This is by no means a comprehensive list, there are many more shows out there and I hope to establish a calendar over the next months (on the EGB Website).

Remember, not every show or trade fair is suitable to all of us, as we have different philosophies or expectations. But we hope that by forwarding you the information we receive you can find the right platforms for your instruments and ultimately, the handbuilt guitar will receive greater public exposure.

As previously reported this coming NAMM Show will have a small Boutique Guitar Showcase as kind of an experiment for a larger project in 2018. Several EGB members will be part of this exhibit (and many are exhibiting with their own booths as well). We will continue to establish a mutual collaboration and hope that great things will come of it for 2018!

April 5 - 8, 2017
Musikmesse Frankfurt

Michael and I had a very nice visit with Michael Biwer, the new guy in charge of Musikmesse Frankfurt. I know that many of you have history with MM, positive as well as negative. But from the conversations Michael and I had with him we got the impression that he is really trying to bring new concepts and ideas to it, and to bring the ship around. He approached me with great interest in what our members would need and want and listened intently to what we had to say. A boutique guitar area is under consideration, where they are specifically asking for our input. I should receive more information in the next week, including hopefully a special offer for EGB members...:-)

Here some information from them (in italics cited text from them, otherwise translated from German):
Musikmesse – It’s my tune
Musikmesse is the International Trade Fair for Musical Instruments, Sheet Music, Music Production and Music Business Connections. From classic instruments, guitars, bases, wind instruments and percussion to electronic equipment, hardware and software, the range covers the complete spectrum of musical requisites.

To optimize fulfilling the needs of the various groups MM led several conversations with exhibitors, visitor groups, and associations like the EGB. Responding to their input Messe Frankfurt has initiated new developments, which they expect will make the event even more attractive to exhibitors and visitors.

With various  new presentation formats the organizer wants to accommodate businesses of all sizes: from small manufacturers to large key players. Starting at 4 sqm size booths can be rented for package prices, allowing a professional trade show presentation with reduced effort (and expense).

Also planned is a 'Brandworld Guitar', a new concept for guitar brands with product presentations, education, concerts, and master classes, especially also focusing on the younger musicians. The Musikmesse Festival presents renowned artists in clubs, bars and venues throughout Frankfurt.

Companies focusing on dealer and distributor relations can book their booth in the  „Business Area & Full-range Companies“. Here a quiet atmosphere offers an ideal environment for business negotiations.

On three days, Musikmesse will be held parallel to Prolight + Sound, International Fair of Technologies and Services for Entertainment, Integrated Systems and Creation. Together, the last editions of the two fairs attracted over 100,000 visitors from 130 countries and around 2,000 exhibitors from 60 nations.

Cordefactum Guitar Festival, Belgium

This show will be especially interesting for those of you who participated or want to participate in the Local Wood Challenge as Cordefactum is collaborating with us for the continuing of the LWC project.

The first day of the festival, Friday the 14th, is dedicated to the Leonardo-Guitar-Research-Project-Event with lectures, blind and non-blind audience testing, demonstrations, concerts and an exhibition of the Leonardo Project Guitars. Parallel to that event, external builders are invited to display there non-tropical local wood guitars (of any kind) on the Local Wood Challenge Show, an initiative of the European Guitar Builders Association.
The Leonardo-Guitar-Research-Project (LGRP) studies the possibilities of building acoustic and classical guitars from non-tropical local woods.
