Message From Your President:
Grief. Gratitude. Greatness.
I hope everyone is finding enjoyment and peace during the holiday season. As we come to the final month of 2020, I find it impossible to characterize this year with a single theme. Instead I have felt and seen moments of grief, gratitude, and greatness. I feel grief for those that are  suffering, stressed, and overworked. I have gratitude for my health and the health of friends and family. I see greatness as we discover new ways to communicate, care for patients, support the community, and keep our businesses going. Thank you for all that you do to make a difference during this roller coaster of a year! We have some great updates in this newsletter and thank you to those that participated in our first ever NvAND Step Challenge! Please reach out to myself or fellow board members if you are needing help or support during the holidays.
Dillon Martin, RDN
NvAND President 2020-2021

NvAND Spotlight:

Aurora Buffington, PhD, RDN, LD, FAND, is a NvAND member and dietitian who was recently recognized as a fellow by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND) is a recognition certificate that identifies Academy members who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of nutrition and dietetics, establishing them as role models. Aurora was nominated for this month’s spotlight because she is willing to take on leadership roles, is passionate about sharing information regarding community programs and because she is a role model, not only to interns she precepts for but for fellow dietitians as well. Aurora is described as being an initiator, educator, and mentor.

Step-Into-Fall Challenge Winners
The month of November has finally come to an end, and so has the completion of our first academy fundraiser! The results of the Step-Into-Fall Challenge are in, and I’m pleased to share that we’ve had considerable efforts made by participants to earn the title as one of the top prize winners who will receive prize baskets! Since the excitement to win was shared equally among Board and Non-Board members, I’ve decided that two in each group should be recognized for their hard work. The awardees and their noteworthy step records are shown below. Thank you to everyone who participated, your support of NvAND is extremely appreciated! I look forward to holding future fundraising events with all of you- stay safe and keep moving and grooving!

Become an Academy Spokesperson

The Academy's landmark volunteer Spokesperson program, widely emulated by professional associations across the country, advances the Academy's mission and goals; increases the public's knowledge of food, nutrition and health; establishes the registered dietitian as the public's best source for nutrition information; and increases the overall visibility of the dietetics profession and the Academy.

Three-year Spokesperson terms begin June 1. Openings are available in a number of geographical and practice specialty areas. Click here for more information about open markets and expertise areas.  The application deadline is February 5. Click here for more application information.

Roxana Ehsani is a local dietitian currently serving as a Media Spokesperson and was a previous Member Spotlight. Our blog has a recap of an interview with her as well as her spotlight video if you would like to hear her take on this role.

Know Your Legislator

Have you looked up your state legislators yet?  The Public Policy Committee’s plan is to send a general letter to the current members of the legislature, including that each individual would be contacted by a Dietetic Association member in their district to provide expert information on nutrition-related topics.

Please put March 12, 2021 on your calendars for Legislative Day. This year will look entirely different than in the past since our Legislative Day, and our Annual meeting to follow the next day, will be virtual.  Hopefully, that means that more of you will be able to attend Legislative Day.

To get ready, we plan to provide training sometime late February/early March.  Then we will briefly meet the morning of Legislative Day before doing breakout sessions with our legislators who are willing to schedule time with us.  It will certainly be a challenge, but we think it will work!!  Are you in?

Let me know who represents you in the Nevada State Legislature.
