Message From Your President:
Summer 2020...We Hardly Knew You
We all continue to make adjustments for COVID. We have grown accustomed to wearing masks in public, social distancing, and recycling bins full of Amazon boxes. The usual summer pool parties and extravagant 4th of July celebrations could not take place this year. August will bring new challenges such as how to help our children navigate full-time online learning. And you know what, we will get through these challenges together. I continue to be impressed by the efforts of our NvAND board and members. I have seen many recent graduates posting that they completed the exam and can now add credentials to their name. Congrats!!! Also be sure you check out our member spotlight as we highlight individuals that are making a difference.

The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics is making changes this year for our safety. FNCE will now be an all-virtual event for 2020. NvAND has also made some adjustments to our regular schedule. Our fall state meeting, usually in September, will also be an all-virtual event. We are in the process of lining up a great speaker and will be providing you more information on this event in the near future.

In this current newsletter our past president Samatha Coogan, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, FAND has compiled the 2019-2020 Annual Report to members. You’ll find the link below. Sam also chairs the NvAND Bylaws Committee. We are asking NvAND to please vote on some important changes to the bylaws that will help us move forward more efficiently as an organization. Thank you Sam for your hard work on these two endeavors! Finally if you haven’t joined our Facebook Group then please submit a request to join. This is a great way to keep connected with friends and colleagues.

Even though Summer of 2020 has been extremely challenging, I know each of us will keep finding ways to make a difference in the lives of patients and our community.

Dillon Martin, RDN
NvAND President 2020-2021

A recent change to the NvAND Bylaws needs the approval of the membership.  It has been proposed to update the Bylaws to allow future changes to be approved by the elected Board of Directors, rather than the membership.  Please review full description and voice your approval below.

NvAND Spotlight: Christina Saheb RDN, LD and Lory Hayon RDN, LD

     Christina    Lory

This month we would like to highlight the efforts of the two dietitians at Clark County School District (CCSD): Christina Saheb RDN, LD and Lory Hayon RDN, LD (pictured above). You can follow @CCSDfoodservice on social media platforms.

These two dietitians were nominated due to their phenomenal work during the pandemic. CCSD food service uses a central kitchen. When schools closed and COVID guidelines for social distancing were released, the food service team had to come up with multiple plans. Christina and Lory brainstormed with their team on the best ways to follow these new guidelines while still feeding nutrient dense foods to those in need... Read the Full Spotlight

Take Action Today

Is the thought of getting involved in public policy intimidating? Does it sound like a difficult undertaking? The truth is that there are many different ways to get involved in public policy. Some ways are very simple, and some require more work. The following video was created to show some of the simpler ways you can get involved. It’s not as hard as you think!

The Academy is currently promoting the following:
  • HEROES Act (H.R. 6800): The Senate is working on their own version of this fourth coronavirus related legislative package. The Academy is urging all members to contact their senators and encourage the inclusion of increases to federal food assistance programs to support children and families during the ongoing pandemic. You can find contact information for Senator Cortez Masto and Senator Rosen here.
  • MNT Act (H.R. 6971): The MNT Act has picked up a couple of co-sponsors, and is still in committee. Sharing stories of how MNT has helped your clients and/or patients is a great way to support this Act.
  • Dietary Guidelines Scientific Report: The Academy is encouraging members to become familiar with and respond to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s Scientific Report. You can find more information here.
The Action Center now has an option for non-members to Take Action! Share the opportunity for Action Alerts with colleagues and friends who are not Academy members.

Who's My Legislator

Senator Joyce Woodhouse currently represents Senate District 5, located in the Henderson area. Senator Woodhouse came to politics after 17 years as a first-grade teacher and then as an elementary school principal, serving the Clark County School District for 40 years. Her lifelong commitment to education causes her to continue to go into the classroom, as time permits, to read to children.

Senator Woodhouse was elected to the Senate where she served from 2006-2010 and elected again in 2012. She is termed out in November and the
Nevada Legislature will lose a powerful advocate for education. She has worked on compromises to keep as much money in schools as possible, a challenge in Nevada. As Director of the School-Community Partnership Program for the Clark County School District from 1985-2006, she was the liaison between the school district and the business comm unity, bringing together resources to enhance the education of students.

I am sure that Senator Woodhouse will continue her advocacy for children and education after she steps down from the Nevada State Senate.  She is
extremely committed to improving education here in Nevada.

Kara Freeman, DrPH, RD, FAND
State Public Policy Representative

Food & Nutrition Magazine Update

Due to the extraordinary challenges and uncertain future posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Academy has transitioned Food & Nutrition Magazine to a digital format and paid subscriptions are no longer available. All content members have come to love will continue to be available at, and each issue will be emailed to you. With the extension of shelter-in-place orders in many states and public health guidance on physical distancing, the Academy is pleased to be able to continue to produce Food & Nutrition without putting editors, photographers, printers and others at risk.

Food and Nutrition Magazine now has a new section called Diverse Voices in Dietetics. Any Academy member is able to contribute to this section and share their story on the topic of diversity. Click here for submission instructions.
