Happy New Year!

In various media outlets, 2018 is being touted as the Year of the Woman - I linked just a few below. But the most interesting article I read recently is about what happens to industries when women reach critical mass of influence. According to Time Magazine, the structures that enable sexism seem to be exploding and that when women make up about 20-30% of the institution, things began to change. The article cites military and government examples but also the data shows that corporate America benefits in many ways as well. So what happens when we reach 20-30% of women-led farms (currently at 14%)? What changes will be brought about?

Perhaps 2018 is the Year of the Woman. The only way we will truly know, is by being counted. I know I sound like a broken record - but the Farm Census is on - and filling it out is the single most important thing you can do to help women achieve parity in agriculture. Please listen to our interview with Barbara Rater of USDA NASS about the importance of the data they collect - Be Counted: Female Farmers and the 2017 Ag Census

We're excited about all of the coming year's storytelling projects. Building this platform to elevate women's voices in the agricultural conversation has been incredibly rewarding. From images, to essays, to the airwaves. We are working to mindfully expand the platforms. We hope you'll join us and tell your story. Let us know if we can help.

I’ve found that farming commands an unparalleled level of commitment and intestinal fortitude.  You don’t just start a farm overnight and you certainly don’t make it a viable one on inspiration alone.  - Elaine Vandiver of  Old Homestead Alpacas
