April through June 2019 Update from SmartPhones4Water (Q2 2019)!

SmartPhones4Water (S4W) mobilizes young researchers, citizen scientists and mobile technology to improve lives by strengthening our understanding and management of water. We're in the midst of collecting precipitation data for the 2019 monsoon in Nepal, beginning data collection in other locations (Netherlands, California), and planning and preparing for expanding existing S4W projects and potentially starting work in new locations. For this newsletter though, we're going to focus on some upcoming educational opportunities related to our mission and ongoing work :)

Smartphone Data Collection Training Videos!

We've uploaded a 5-part video series with an overview of collecting data using smartphones with Open Data Kit (ODK). It will give you everything you need to understand the mobile data collection platform we use for our ongoing work in Nepal, or some tricks and tools to use for data collection wherever you call home! It is available at the link below :)

PhD Dissertation Announcement about S4W!

We are pleased to announce that Jeff Davids, who founded S4W and initiated and spearheaded initial data collection efforts in Nepal, has completed his PhD dissertation through TU Delft in the Netherlands. It covers the story of S4W from its inception through the present and is available online here, and we've included the front cover below. Check it out!

Call for Abstracts for MoChWo 2019!

SmartPhones4Water Nepal (S4W-Nepal) is proud to be helping organize a symposium titled “Towards Sustainable Water Resource Management - Citizen Science and Beyond” in conjunction with the 4th annual conference on Mountains in a Changing World (MoChWo) in Kathmandu, Nepal in October 2019. All interested parties are invited to submit proposals, attend, and participate in the broader conversation.

The deadlines for abstract submission and registration are June 15th and August 31st, respectively. You can find out more information here or from the poster below!

Short Course on Smartphone Data Collection in South Lake Tahoe, California!

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California will be offering a free 4-hour short course the afternoon of Thursday, July 25th, about collecting scientific data with smartphones! In addition to learning in a classroom setting, participants will gain hands-on experience collecting data in the field using smartphone apps. S4W's work in Nepal will be presented as an example of using both smartphones and citizen scientists to collect meaningful data for natural resource management. You can find out more about the course below!

LTCC Enrollment and Class Registration

For those interested, enrolling for the course is a two part process. First, participants will need to apply to the California community college system. Non-degree seeking students (not already in the system) can use this link to begin the application process: http://www.ltcc.edu/admissions/nondegreeseeking.php

Once you have applied, and have been cleared for registration, you will be able to search the LTCC summer schedule and enroll in EVS 191D Special Topic: Using Smartphone Apps for Scientific Data Collection.

Other Ways to Participate and Support Us!

If you have an old smartphone (or other cell phone) sitting in a drawer somewhere, you can donate it to us and we'll either give it directly to a citizen scientist in Nepal or recycle it and use 100% of the funds generated to support ongoing work. You can find out more details about this here!

Like every other nonprofit organization, we'll also accept your money. 100% of your donation will go to work in Nepal (i.e. S4W-Nepal salaries and expenses) and none will be used for launching western (i.e. Netherlands or California) S4W projects. You can donate through our CrowdRise page here, or if you'd like to donate more than $100, please email us (info@smartphones4water.org) for a direct donation since CrowdRise takes a small cut of every donation for their operations.

We are also on social media (Facebook and Twitter) and would love your support! We only post occasionally and promise not to overwhelm you ;)

S4W-Nepal Stories!

Every so often, someone writes a story about our work. We also publish either an interview with a citizen scientist or science story about what we're doing through our website from time to time. You can check out all the past stories below, and we're currently developing some news ones that should be out soon!
