La Salle Prep Falcon Forum: December 4, 2022

La Salle Prep Falcon Forum

Mission Minute

“God conceals himself in the most ordinary situations of our lives. He does not come in extraordinary events, but in everyday things: our daily work, a chance encounter, someone in need... That's where the Lord is, who calls to us and inspires our actions.” (Pope Francis, 11/29/22)

I love the concept of finding God in the ordinary and working in a high school allows for this opportunity on a daily basis. It is the door held out for a peer, the joy of bringing in gifts for the Christmas drive, the laughter in the hallways at lunch, or an interaction between a student and a teacher. During these weeks between holidays, we are tempted to wish days away in anticipation of vacation, rest, and festivities, but I’m reminding myself to slow down and enjoy this time. I love the sound of the choir rehearsing for our holiday concert, the decorations emerging in the hallways, and even the everyday work of teaching and learning.

This coming week we will celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with Mass on Thursday, December 8. As a result, we have two special bell schedules on Thursday and Friday.

Thank you to all who were able to join our community for Yulefest. We wish our community peace and joy in the weeks ahead!

Live Jesus in Our Hearts,

Alanna O’Brien
Principal

Community Events

Thank You for a Wonderful Yulefest

Thank you to our sponsors, adult and student volunteers, everyone who donated wine, the wineries who poured at the event, and Co-chairs Megan Hays '11 and Kody Betonte Thomas '02 - Yulefest was a great success due to your efforts and commitment!

The 500+ alumni, alumni parents, current families, and Falcon friends who attended enjoyed a wonderful community Christmas celebration, a fifty-six-year-old annual tradition started by the Christian Brothers the year La Salle opened its doors. Not only did everyone have a splendid holiday celebration, our host, the Alumni Association, raised more than $17,000 which will support La Salle and its students in the form of tuition assistance, scholarships, capital projects, and more. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in 2023!

Internship Opportunities

OHSU has an internship program for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior high school students interested in pursuing careers in medicine or biomedical research through a 16-week course starting February 1 through May 17, 2023 from 6-8 PM. Students are introduced to the scientific process and gain access to research scientists from OHSU and other Portland research initiatives. Students will meet for two hours on Wednesdays for a lecture series and learn about ongoing research projects. A researcher will mentor each student. Each student gains first-hand knowledge of research methods, and, with their mentor's help, will present a published research article in a journal club format and develop their own research proposal.

You can find more information here. Applications for the 2023 program are open now and close on Friday, December 16.
