Toronto Community Housing congratulates the winners and thanks the donors for supporting the 2020 Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship Program.  TCHC and partners Blaney McMurtry LLP and Scadding Court Community Centre awarded 59 scholarships this year to students age 19 to 29 pursuing full-time postsecondary education or professional training.

Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, financial eligibility and community leadership through the students’ volunteer involvement in youth empowerment, anti-racism, diversity and community safety. A majority of this year's recipients live in TCHC communities. Scholarship winners will receive up to $4,000 in financial assistance to help with tuition and school-related expenses.

TCHC partnering with HSI/Canada to help tenants care for pets during the pandemic

Humane Society International/Canada (HSI/Canada) and Friends of HSI (FHSI) are partnering with Toronto Community Housing to support residents with companion animals in the GTA. Through a large network of community organizations, HSI/Canada is providing more than 40,000 kg of pet food and supplies, plus animal care support. The program is working with TCHC to ensure that pet owners impacted by the pandemic living in TCHC buildings across the GTA receive the support they need to keep their animals healthy and at home.  TCHC frontline employees identify tenants who would like to receive donations and arrange for outdoor pick-up locations as well as delivery to vulnerable tenants or seniors sheltering in place.

Keeping seniors safe through mask donations from community partners

Generous donations of face masks from several community partners are helping Toronto Community Housing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep some of our most vulnerable tenants safe.

The Seniors Housing Unit Access & Support team worked with volunteers from University Health Networks (UHN) Open Lab and the City of Toronto Senior Services and Long-Term Care Division in August to package the masks. Building staff then distributed mask packages to all households in the Seniors Housing Unit’s 83 buildings.

COVID-19 October update

In response to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases this fall, we are maintaining the extended 10-hour shift schedules and enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols at all TCHC residential buildings. In addition, a plan to bring a limited number of employees working from home back to their office locations has been delayed until the new year.

Our COVID-19 emergency planning and business recovery teams continue to work with the City and Toronto Public Health to ensure we have the right prevention controls and protocols in place to protect the safety of tenants, employees and visitors to our buildings. Two-thirds of our employees continue to be at work in our buildings, communities and regional offices, delivering essential services and supporting vulnerable tenants and seniors. The other one-third of our team is working from home.
