Get involved: It's Springtime

Kia ora koutou

The first signs of spring are already evident. Little flower buds are starting to unfold into beautiful blossoms. I love this time of the year, watching so much change, including ourselves, waking up from our hibernation.

Lets get our heads together and plan some fun activities for the coming spring and summer. I would like to help you connect with others, and the best way to do this is for you to welcome others to join you at activities such as potluck dinners, movie night, bike ride, craft evening, or something completely different that interests you.

Join me (Jettie) for a coffe / hot chocolate to plan activities and events for Spring. Everyone welcome.

Bring a picnic, enjoy the on-site food stalls or simply relax under the beautiful sakura (cherry blossom) trees.

This free event runs from 11.30am - 2pm and is proudly supported by the Nelson Miyazu Sister City Association & The Nelson Japanese Society.

Feature Location: Cable Bay
Cable Bay is only a short 20 minute drive north of Nelson city. It's a beautiful spot for walking, snorkeling (in summer), paddling, camping or just visit for a picnic. There is a cute cafe which reopens for the 2014/15 season on Wednesday 23rd September.

The complete walk takes about 3½ hours one way, and requires transport arrangements to be made. From the Cable Bay end a shorter return trip is to the top of the first hill (1 hr return) or to the forest edge (2 hr return). Information on the Cable Way Walkway can be found on DOC's Website.

Cable Bay was originally known as Schroeders Mistake and the general locality is known as Wakapuaka.

The bay takes its modern name from New Zealand's first overseas cable link, to Australia, which was opened on 21 February 1876. The international telegraph cable established a connection with the world-wide telegraph network via Sydney.

Success Story: David Squires
Happy to be here

We moved to Nelson from Bainham, Golden Bay, in February this year, and have really been pleased that we made the right decision, at the right time. After 15 years of living in the country on an acre of land which provided most of our needs: fruit and veges, eggs, firewood, etc. it is really nice to spend my time doing things I ‘want to do’, not ‘have to do’. Self-sufficiency is a great way to live when you are younger and have lots of energy.

We left England in 1965, migrating to Australia like many others of our generation. I worked mostly as a design draughtsman and industrial engineer, in a variety of companies including Nestles in Warrnambool, Black & Decker in Melbourne, Mount Isa Mines in Queensland, and Golden Circle in Brisbane, before coming to New Zealand in 1976. During this time our family expanded to 3 boys and 2 girls. Since our arrival in N.Z., I have worked in senior positions in the health and local government fields as well as operating as a self-employed training consultant, and later in Golden Bay as a home handyman/cleaner. Out of all the different jobs I’ve done, I enjoyed the last one most of all!

We joined Nelson Newcomers group about a month ago and were overwhelmed with the welcome we received. It has helped us to feel accepted, and to be part of the community here. Now I have time to revive my passion for art and invention, as well as going places, seeing things, and being in walking distance to the Brook Sanctuary, and the town. Nelson has greatly exceeded my expectations. I have initiated an inventors group which currently has 6 members and would be pleased to hear from anyone else who would like to join.

My sincere thanks to you and the Nelson Newcomers Group for making us so welcome.
