Join a Sports Club and Make New Friends
If you're looking for friends, joining a sports team is a great way to connect with people. At the Nelson newcomers Network we have a range of activities including a walking group and a family swimming group. However there are loads of sports clubs in your area you could join. Joining a sports club helps you to connect  to people as you have a shared goal / interest, which means you don't have to worry about small talk. Sports Clubs can help you  find a place of belonging too and are loads of fun.

Here are a a few examples:

Just about every town has their own tennis club catering to beginners up to advance players. To find out about a tennis club in your area visit

This one is for those who are keen to challenge themselves a little and are not afraid of fitness. Waka ama or outrigger canoes have long been an integral part of the culture of Pacific people. Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club, is all about fun, fitness, the outdoors, team work and enjoying other people's company. Check out their website to find out how you can get involved:

Several Golf courses to choose from and competitions to enter, wether competitive or social. The Tasman Golf Club at Kina cliffs  provides beautiful views over the ocean or enjoy spectacular sunsets at the Nelson Golf ClubThe Waahi Taakaro Golf Club is another option just along the Matai River.

The Nelson Tramping Club is always looking for new members and caters again for people of varying trapping levels. Meet some new people and explore our spectacular area.

There are many many other clubs you could join. Check out the Sports Tasman Sports Club Directory to find out how you can join a sports club this summer.

Thanks Bruno for stepping into this important role.
Free Workshop for Newcomers
Lets make Music Newcomers
A chance to revive your musical skills, no matter how limited, from the past. Simple melodies to get you going again. So many people played an instrument  in their younger lives and their instrument has sat in a cupboard ever since, having given up because of time pressure or the lack of opportunity to make music with others. If this is you, dig out those dusty instrument cases or borrow or hire an instrument (Nelson School of Music has a good range) Even find a recorder in an 'op shop' or a plastic one, for starters from a Dollar shop.

Newcomer Peter is starting a Newcomers Music Group which will likely happen on Wednesdays. Times and venue to be arranged depending on responses. Contact Peter or 9276237 to find out more.
Do you want to start a new group?
