Get to know your Neighbours
Do you know your neighbours? Have you taken up the courage to knock on the door next door to introduce yourself? Starting off with a wave as you neighbours walk past is a great start. However, getting to know your neighbours helps build new connections. Knowing your neighbours is very positive. It's handy when you run out of sugar half way through baking a cake. It's useful when you are on holiday and you need someone to feed your chooks or take in your mail. It feels safe knowing your neighbours are watching your back. And it's fun, chatting over the fence about the best techniques for pruning those roses or inviting them over for a BBQ. People who are connected with their neighbours help create a strong and safe community.

This month Neighbourhood Day celebrates all this.

Neighbourhood day is held on March 27th to 29th. It aims to turn strangers into neighbours and streets into neighbourhoods. We are all encouraged to get involved. Check out their website for more information.

Why not check out  and sign up to stay connected with your neighbours online. It's a great tool to keep updated about what's going on in your local community. Just don't use this to avoid the face to face contact. :)

Success Story: Kay
Kay came on her own to Nelson after living in Christchurch (CHCH) for 10 years. When she was due to retire she decided it was time for a change. With her two daughters and grandsons living here, Kay decided this was where she wanted to be.
Kay sold her house in ChCh and bought a lovely old cottage and a small B&B up on the hill  and moved up just before Christmas a year ago. She wanted to make new friends and have her own life. When Kay saw the Newcomers group advertised she plucked up the courage and went along to the coffee morning.
"I  really just wanted to write and say how wonderful I have found the Newcomers group. I moved up to Nelson from Christchurch just over a year ago and saw the add in the local paper for the Newcomers coffee mornings at Deville's. It took me a couple of months to pluck up the courage to go, and have to admit I found it really hard walking into the cafe at first,. But I was warmly welcomed and accepted and after a few weeks I started to feel like I belonged. I have made some lovely friends and have never been happier with my life ". Kay
