A number of Marcy-Holmes residents, property owners and business owners attended a Safety Meeting organized by the Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association on Monday, September 16, at First Congregational Church.

Over the course of that meeting a number of individuals expressed interest in forming a Safety Committee that could be organizationally supported by MHNA. The purpose of this interest form is to gather names from the community who would be interested in serving on this Committee or participating in any of its activities.

You do not need to be on the MHNA board of directors to serve on this, or any committee. All members of the community are invited and encouraged to participate in the neighborhood association. You also don't need to use this form just to subscribe to crime or safety notices—everyone who already receives our emails will always receive those notices

Please only fill out the form if you are interested in collaborating with your neighbors and other members of the community to come up with ideas and potential projects that can improve the safety of the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood.
If you would like to share the link to the form, copy:

In the coming weeks our staff and board will attempt to come up with a plan to help organize those who respond to this form. We have a number of major events in the next few weeks, so we will likely be better to think through some of this new, potential project after our Election/Membership meeting on Tuesday, October 15th. Please consider attending this event, it will take place at The Machine Shop, 300 2nd Street SE. Socializing begins at 6pm, the meeting will begin promptly at 6:30 pm.

Interested people may download the SAFE-U Notifications app from Everbridge to receive safety notifications from the UMN. After downloading the app enter the keyword UMNSAFEU (case sensitive) to subscribe to alerts.

The MHNA board needs your voice. The greater diversity of people involved in the MHNA board, the more our neighborhood thrives and remains a wonderful place to live, work, learn, play and grow—for everyone: renters, homeowners, students, business and property owners.

Any Resident Member or Non-resident Member who has been a member for at least twenty (20) days can run for an open Director's seat.
Because MHNA expanded the overall size of the board this past April through a bylaw amendment (from 11 to 15 elected Directors), there will be a higher number of open seats at this year's election.

What does board membership involve? We’re happy to have a chat with you and share what we know.

Take a look at our Board Position Description.

If you're interested, fill our our Candidate Form (Word | PDF | Online).

Contact Chris Lautenschlager, MHNA Executive Director, with any questions.

The MPRB is holding a public hearing for the Holmes Park playground concept plan on Wednesday, October, 6:30 pm in the Board Room at Mary Merrill MPRB Headquarters, 2117 West River Road.

To learn more about this project, please visit the MPRB's website.

Anyone interested in speaking at the hearing may call 612.230.6400 during regular hours (8 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday) to sign up ahead of time. People may also sign up in person outside of the Board Room between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm on the day of the hearing.

Thanks to well over 100 individuals who were able to attend some portion of our extended Open House / Presentation meeting on Wednesday, September 25th. Representatives from MHNA, the Minnesota Student Association, the Dinkytown Business Alliance, Preserve Historic Dinkytown were able to make short presentations, in addition to the longer project description given by representatives of CA Ventures and ESG Architects.

Many thanks also go to the staff of Loring Bar + Restaurant, who served as excellent hosts for the evening.

There will be a discussion of this 25 story, mixed-use development at the next MHNA Land Use + Development Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 1 at First Congregational Church (500 8th Avenue SE). The next presentation of the project by the development team is expected at the November 5th Land Use meeting.

Walter "Cork" Johnson, longtime Marcy-Holmes resident and volunteer passed away earlier this week. Walter was Emeritus Faculty in the UMN's Physics department, where he specialized in the measurement of atomic masses. He and his wife, Harriet, lived on 8th Avenue SE for over fifty years.

Earlier this year, the Johnsons provided a fascinating oral history that delved into the transformation of this neighborhood. You can find it on the Southeast Seniors website.

A memorial service for Walter is planned for Saturday, October 19th at University Baptist Church, 1219 University Avenue SE.
