EAST HENNEPIN AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS

Hennepin County is partnering with the City of Minneapolis to improve the East Hennepin Ave corridor from 8th St SE to Johnson St NE in 2019 and 2020. Planned improvements include:

  • Curb ramp upgrades to meet Americans with Disability Act standards
  • A mill and overlay for the entire corridor
  • A roadway conversion from four-to-three lanes, including bike lanes, from 8th St SE to Johnson St NE
  • Walking and biking improvements between 5th Ave SE and Pierce St NE

Copies of the comment form may be download from the project webpage. To learn more about the projects, visit www.hennepin.us/hennepinavenue or www.minneapolismn.gov/cip/futureprojects/presidents-bike-blvd
We do have some concerns about this project, namely that no permanent traffic light is proposed at the intersection of East Hennepin Ave and 5th Ave SE. Instead, it has been proposed that during afternoon rush hour (between 4 - 6 pm), left turns are not permitted onto 5th Ave SE from East Hennepin Ave (see image below, provided courtesy of Hillcrest Development).
If vehicles (cars, and especially semis) cannot turn left onto 5th Ave SE from East Hennepin, they will have only two options: either turning left later onto 8th Street SE (then turning left onto 6th Ave SE), or they will have to turn left earlier at 10th Avenue SE (and subsequently turn right onto 8th Street SE). Both of these options would appear to drive more traffic onto our residential 8th Street SE, undermining the goal of making 8th Street SE more pedestrian and bike friendly.
We strongly encourage you to contact the planners on this project, insisting that a) a traffic light be installed at the rehabbed intersection of East Hennepin Avenue and 5th Avenue SE, and b) that our neighborhood doesn't want 8th Street SE used as an alternative for cars and semis to ultimately access 9th Street SE

LAND USE + DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: Meeting this Wednesday

Although there is no official agenda yet, there will be a meeting of the Marcy-Holmes Land Use + Development Committee on Wednesday, August 7 to discuss a possible project that would impact the current site of McDonald's, Dinkytown Wine + Spirits, Pagoda, Himalayan and Five Guys.

Representatives from ESG and CA Ventures will be at this meeting to discuss ideas that they have for this half block, and will be soliciting community feedback. Everyone is welcome to attend.

BOARD ELECTIONS COMING UP THIS OCTOBER

The MHNA board needs your voice. The greater diversity of people involved in the MHNA board, the more our neighborhood thrives and remains a wonderful place to live, work, learn, play and grow—for everyone: renters, homeowners, students, business and property owners.

Any Resident Member or Non-resident Member who has been a member for at least twenty (20) days can run for an open Director's seat. For 2020, we are particularly eager to bring expertise and interests in management, finances, creative placemaking, transportation / infrastructure, and land use and development.

We also need diverse perspectives. So, if you have at least an interest in any of these issues (or others) and want to be a part of something big, please consider running.

WHY DO I SERVE ON THE BOARD?

“I serve on the MHNA board to help communicate neighborhood concerns to city leaders and decision makers in order to influence policy and program decisions for the betterment of the neighborhood and the city.

For me, the greatest benefit of being involved at the neighborhood board level is the exposure to the city’s planning processes, access to elected officials and city staff, and the opportunity to speak for the neighborhood’s residents to influence how the city serves its citizens.”

— Erich Wunderlich, MHNA Vice President

What does board membership involve? We’re happy to have a chat with you and share what we know.
