Asana of the month - The Headstand (Shirshasna)

Prema's Yoga News No. 10  11/09/15

Spring is here!! The days are longer and definitely warmer, at least most of the times. I don't know about you, but to me it felt like a long, cold winter. Not that I mind a bit of frost and icy wind, a good reason to indulge in a traditional swiss cheese fondue.

Two weekends ago we celebrated the beginning of Spring with a wonderful, inspiring, uplifting, healthy and fun Retreat in the beautiful Mount Warning area of northern NSW. A big thank you again to all the keen Yoginis and Yogis, who made this intense yoga weekend perfect. I'll add some photos at the end of this newsletter.

Yoga Class Passes
As you well know in the past I was not really observant with the yoga class passes being good for two or four months. Most went over, and I never put a date for good until. As of this Season I will be a bit stricter with this rule and put until when the pass is good for. Of course over the Christmas break and if I go on holidays I will add that time. Anyway if you purchased any yoga class passes early this year, they are good until beginning of November.

See you soon again, looking forward to some good yoga practice.

You can also check my Yoga Facebook page Hatha Yoga Ipswich for updates and inspirational readings, as well as my blog-posts on my website (the new ones are listed on the right-hand-side "featured posts").

The Headstand - Shirshasana

Sirshasana is the first of the 12 basic postures of hatha yoga. It is said to be the most important of all. It has earned the nickname: king of asanas. Its benefits are numerous.

Since the yogi is standing on the head, more weight tends to rest on the neck and to counteract this tendency, it is important to follow the proper technique.

Physical Benefits

  • Brings fresh blood to the brain
  • Rests the heart by using gravity to stimulate veinous return
  • Relieves pressure from the veins in the lower body (varicose veins)
  • Encourages deeper breathing, therefore strengthens the lungs and increases one's vitality
  • Relieves pressure in the lower back
  • Improves physical balance

Energetic (Pranic) Benefits

  • Sublimates gross, sexual energy into subtle, spiritual energy called ojas

Mental Benefits

  • Helps overcome fear
  • Better concentration
  • More acute memory
  • Higher intellectual capacities
  • Sharpens the senses
  • Improves mental balance

Spiritual Benefits

  • More ojas means better meditations
  • Helps assimilate the vedantic teachings by looking at life from a different angle
