Asana of the month -   the wheel

Prema's Yoga News No. 27

Monday 19/3/18

Namaste -

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This year the Easter weekend is early.
Please take note, that on Thursday 29/3/18 we have NO Yoga classes.
This is the Thursday before good-Friday. Plus the Queen's Baton Relay is coming through Ipswich that day.
If you are in my yoga class on a Wednesday night at the PCYC, presently the class starts at a later time. Due to the renovations and upgrade at the PCYC Ipswich. I really don't know, how long it will take until we are back to our normal time and in the new room. My guess is after easter/school holidays.  If you missed a few weeks, please check with the PCYC directly. Thank You!

Except for the Thursday 29/3/18 before the long weekend, all other Yoga classes at the Scout Halls are on as normal during the school holidays.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Please keep following my Yoga Facebok page Hatha Yoga Ipswich for updates, photos, shared links.
Or follow my gratitude and moon reading posts on Instagram @mariaprema
As well as my blog-posts and website for updates.

Thank you !!
Be well and happy

Yoga class in Haigslea with Ken.

Many of you know Ken from my Yoga classes. The last couple years he is always in the class on a Thursday at 5pm, before that for many years on Tuesday morning 9am.
Last year Ken completed the Yoga teachers training course and studies at VIMI Yoga with Celia Roberts.
Since February Ken teaches a weekly Yoga class on a Tuesday 5pm - 6:30pm at the Church Hall in Haigslea, QLD.

YOGA (In the Viniyoga tradition)

Where ?: Haigslea Uniting Church Hall, 765 Thagoona-Haigslea Road, Haigslea Qld 4306 (opposite Haigslea State Primary School)

When ?: Tuesday evenings – 5pm to 6:30pm – Commencing 6/2/18

How much does it cost ?: Attendance is by donation (you contribute what it’s worth to you to participate) There is no set fee.

What do I bring ?: Essential items – yoga mat, yoga block and water bottle. Optional items – yoga strap, yoga bolster or firm cushion.

Who’s the teacher ?: Your teacher will be Ken Oldham. Ken studied with the Yoga and Integrative Medicine Institute and is a 350 hour, level 1 yoga teacher accredited through Yoga Australia.

What do I do next ?: Just turn up 10-15 minutes before the start time (no booking necessary).

Question: I’m not very flexible, can I still do yoga?
Answer: Absolutely… flexibility comes with practice, and the asanas (yoga poses) can be adapted to suit your current body condition (asana modification is a fundamental concept of Viniyoga).

Question: Isn’t yoga just for girls?
Answer: No way! Yoga is for EVERYBODY… any age (8 to 80 and beyond), any physical shape, any fitness level, and definitely not gender specific. As a matter of fact some very elite, high level football teams practice yoga as part of their regular fitness programmes.

In September 2018, we will have a Yoga & Meditation Retreat Weekend. This time at a new location/facilities in Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.

It's the weekend from 7/9 - 9/9/18

Many of you did ask me, if this Yoga retreat weekend is suitable for beginners. Yes absolutely !!  Everyone goes at their own pace, no yoga experience required. It's actually a good way to be introduced to yoga, and to learn that there is much more to Yoga, than just the exercises. Yoga is a whole lifestyle, everyone finds something they like about it or prefer some part of it. In the end it's  something for everyone.

The cost for the weekend is $420, the deposit to book your space is $120.
At the end of last year I became a member and broadcast volunteer at the international Radio Station Radio 4EB FM 98.10, broadcasting in over 50 languages from the Studio at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. In general I'm on air once a month, sometimes more, for the German speaking language group.

In the greater Brisbane / Ipswich area (SEQ) you can listen to it on FM98.1
or worldwide via the internet. Website:

YOGA Retreat Weekend
September 2018, Friday 7/9 - Sunday 9/9/18

Chakrasana - the wheel

Major benefit:  This asana strengthens the muscles of the abdomen and thighs. It makes the back and hips supple.

  • Begin with the half-wheel.
  • Lying flat on your back with your knees bent. Walk your feet back toward your hips. Clasp your ankles and push your hips right up.
  • In the beginning that is all you do. the half-wheel, bringing the shoulder- blades closer together behind the back. Expanding the chest, the hips high.
  • If you feel strong and are flexible in the back, you can go from here into the full-wheel.

  • With the hips up as high as possible, release the grip on the ankles and bring the hands to the floor behind the shoulders. Fingers pointing forward.
  • With the feet and knees parallel, begin to lift the body off the floor by pushing with the hands and feet.
  • As the body begins to rise, the hips will lead, followed by the chest. the neck will arch back as you bring the top of the head to the floor in preparation for the full wheel pose.
  • Inhale as you straighten the elbows, arching the hips and chest as high as possible. Allow the head to drop back.
  • Breath deeply as you hold the position.
  • After you come out of this position, slowly down on the the mat/floor.
  • Bend your knees to your chest, hug them with your hands/arms and lift your head to your knees, for a counter stretch in your back.
  • Relax with the help of your breath, before continuing to the next asana.
