A bi-weekly look at Labor Administration in the Americas
June 2021

Regional meeting on gender, telework and caregiving co-responsibility took place

The 2nd Hemispheric Dialogue on Gender between Ministries of Labor “Telework and caregiving co-responsibility to achieve a gender-responsive recovery” took place on May 26th, with the participation  of 26 Ministries of Labor of the Americas and the Ministry of Labor of Spain. Responses and regulations adopted by governments were shared, as well as reflections and perspectives related to telework and caregiving co-responsibility; two issues that, under a gender focus, must be treated simultaneously. During the discussions, the

opportunities and risks to gender equality brought about by telework were mentioned, along with some crucial policy elements and conditions that must be met to ensure that telework does not continue to deepen existing gaps between women and men in the labor market but, rather, contributes to achieving joint responsibility for care and promoting gender equality in the region. The Technical Secretariat will shortly send a document with the main conclusions and recommendations

ILO presents its "World Economic and Social Outlook" report

The International Labour Organization (ILO) presented its World Economic and Social Outlook: trends 2021 report, which highlights the long road that the world has ahead for employment and economic recovery. The report points out not only that employment recovery won’t be complete until after 2022, but that it is possible that many of the jobs created in this period will be low-quality and low-productivity jobs. To face the challenge, it recommends governments to promote a generalized and inclusive growth, implement integral labor market policies aimed at the most vulnerable populations, and continue promoting social dialogue.
