THE ELECTION EDITION
HAVE YOU HEARD? AMERICA ELECTED A NEW PRESIDENT.

Donald Trump will be the first climate-denying president ever and is currently the only climate-denying leader of a major industrialized nation. (We always knew America was exceptional.) Even George W. Bush had a reasonable view on climate change.

That’s bad news for the climate and good news for Big Oil. Trump’s inner circle is teeming with Big Oil peeps. We want you to know about them. Think of it as a warm-up for the upcoming four years of environmental outrage.

MYRON EBELL

The man heading up Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency transition team is more than just a climate skeptic - he wrote the book on climate denial. Literally. In 1998, Ebell was listed as one of the authors in the Global Climate Science Communications Plan, a document outlining how the oil industry can undermine the public’s trust in climate science.

Since then, Ebell has made a career out of climate denial. Until joining the Trump team, he served as the Director of Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), an advocacy organization that appears to be funded in part by fossil fuel interests, including ExxonMobil (of ExxonKnew fame). Ebell is also the chair of the Cooler Heads Coalition, a group of organizations “that question global warming alarmism and oppose energy rationing policies.”

So what’s a man with such deep expertise in affronting science doing heading up the EPA transition team? Good question. Watch this space.

STEVE BANNON

There are a ton of reasons to be scared of the man who was just appointed Trump’s chief strategist. His alt-right ideology was considered fringe before this election season, and his rise to power (and the rise of the media outlet he ran prior to taking a cabinet post, Breitbart News) is scary for everyone who is into civil rights.

Among Bannon’s offensive positions are his conspiratorial views on climate change. While Bannon was executive chairman, Breitbart News:

  • Called government support of alternative energy "madness"

  • Relentlessly pursued the idea that global warming is an invention of activists, university researchers and profiteering renewable energy industry professionals determined to assert global governance for their own gain

  • Called those alleged schemers "pure scum"

  • Suggested that the Vatican had been taken over by Marxists after Pope Francis urged the world to protect the environment and slow climate change
HAROLD HAMM

A top contender for the position of  energy secretary in the Trump Administration, Harold Hamm, became one of the wealthiest men in America during the oil and gas drilling boom, and once said, “Every time we can’t drill a well in America, terrorism is being funded.”
MIKE CATANZARO

Mike Catanzaro was the man in charge of leading Trump’s energy team. Meanwhile, in his day job, he's a partner in a lobbying firm with a robust fossil-fuels portfolio that includes Koch Industries, EnCana Oil and Gas, and Halliburton. With clients like that, it makes sense he’d have a track record of climate change denial. This week, Veep-elect Mike Pence reportedly vowed to remove Catanzaro and other lobbyists from the transition team because of their lobbying ties. If that proves true, we can’t wait to see the winner they pick to replace him.
RICK PERRY

Remember way back to 2012 when Rick Perry was running for president and during a debate he tried to list the three departments he would get rid of if in office? And then he couldn’t remember the third? (This was a different era, when not knowing stuff meant something to the American people.)

Well, he may remember the name of that third agency now, because he’s on the shortlist to take it over. It’s the Department of Energy.

Perry’s energy creds include:

  • Being unsure about climate change. Last year he said, "I don't believe that we have the settled science by any sense of the imagination to stop that kind of economic opportunity…Calling CO2 a pollutant is doing a disservice the country, and I believe a disservice to the world."
  • He wants the Keystone XL pipeline built
  • As Governor of Texas, he filled the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) with appointees friendly to the industries they regulate
  • Also as Governor, he fast-tracked unnecessary coal-fired power plants (until a judge stopped him)
