It took me more than a year of being in the art business to put money on courses, workshops and material. Not because I did not have money for them, but because I never prioritised them. I believed that I could pave my own path. Learn from You Tube and other free sources. Learn by making mistakes and hit and try methods.

Yes, I did. I learnt from all of these. But it took me a lot of time. It took me tons of unsatisfactory projects to learn how to price my work well or say no to ones that did not interest me. It took me a long time to figure out what work could and should be monetised. It took me a long time to realise that every investment I make in myself will pay itself back, with much more!!

Some Investments I made over the last 2 years:

investment v/s returns graph

I loaned money from my father & younger sister to get an iPad and the iPad paid for itself in a few months time. Today, all my work happens on an iPad and I’ve made much much more from it than i invested.

I spent more than 50k on having my website developed last year and it has had a very positive impact on building credibility and attracting valuable work.

I dug a hole in my savings to buy a Mac Last year and the amount of time I saved with it is insane. I no longer have to turn down projects that need heavier softwares. I made 3 times on a project simply because I could use photoshop to create a simple animation that the client wanted. I use my Mac to record and edit videos. It’s paid me back in ways I never imagined.

I invested in a $1,000 course this year. I just paid the last instalment of the course this month and while I still can’t put a number on the returns it’s given me, I would like to list out some very prominent changes that happened:

  • My work structure is 60% more organised and streamlined. It’s almost effortless to find and place something, be it tax documents, project briefs, agreements or invoices. Everything is in my second brain and I can tell you where you will find a file even when I’m half asleep.

  • My content consumption has got a new structure. My relationship with data has improved. With better consumption, my expression has improved. You can see it in the newsletters I’ve written over the last few months.

  • I understood my own process of creating an artwork better. Hence, I was able to build a course that can help you build your process.

  • I gained so much confidence by just being a part of the community that the course offered. They appreciated my work and showed interest in learning it. Their trust gave me the confidence that I could build a course and price it at $500!!

The first 2 people who enrolled in my course, paid me back for the course I invested in. Everything else will be what I make as a tangible result (and profit) of investing in myself.

I totally understand that this investment of Rs 40,000 may seem like a lot, but the money it will repay you with in time saved, projects won, and opportunities made will totally outweigh the initial investment.

The skills you will learn, the perspective shifts you will experience and the processes you will build will help you add value to your personal and professional lives in many tangible ways and it doesn’t just have to be limited to creating a new revenue stream.

If you give lot’s of presentations, use your skills to better communicate the ideas. If you read and write a lot, make visual summaries & remember them better. If you are an artist, learn how to make good money out of your skills. There’s something in here for everyone :)

I have been trying to figure out a way to allow you to make 2 part payment of this course. If you would be interested to explore it, reply and let me know. I’ll help you out.

I’ve written more in the last 3 months than I’ve written in the last 3 years combined. I wanted to have a place on my website with all these newsletters. My website development team put together a quick solution. If you are new to this space check out my old letters here.

If you have any doubts, questions or suggestions reply to this mail :)
