Recap: Midwest concerts with Matt Wilson's "Honey and Salt"

Over the years I've brought Matt Wilson to my hometown of Flensburg/Germany several times. Next time you see him ask him about these visits; he'll tell you that Flensburg is the most Northern city in Germany, and that it is located only 5 minutes from the Danish border – both of these statements are true. He might also tell you that every time I come back home to visit and/or perform the town is putting on a  "Martin Wind Parade" in the city square. That statement, of course, is a product of his amazing imagination.

Well, it took me almost 20 years of knowing Matt to finally visit his hometown of Galesburg, Illinois and meet his two aunts that he'd been telling me about.

On Wednesday, April 25 his group "Honey and Salt" featuring Dawn Thomson (vocals and guitar), Ron Miles (cornet) and Jeff Lederer (woodwinds) appeared at the annual "Carl Sandburg Festival" at the beautiful "Orpheum Theater":
Prior to our concert we visited another landmark – Galesburg’s oldest restaurant, the almost 100-year-old "Coney Island". We sampled their signature hot dogs
(with chili and onions) and washed them down with soda; it felt like going on a time travel…

⋆⋆⋆⋆Four-star review of "Light Blue" by Howard Mandel for Downbeat Magazine

In the April edition of my newsletter I listed links to several articles and reviews that have been published about my new album "Light Blue"; I'm very happy and proud to add this four-star review written by veteran critic Howard Mandel for Downbeat Magazine:

In my conversation with journalist Christian Erber we talked about the release and making of both my own CD "Light Blue", as well as the latest duo recording “Licorice and Beer” with guitarist Ulf Meyer, my move to NYC more than 20 years ago and several other topics – and plenty of my music was played, too!

Duduka Da Fonseca's "Brazilian Jazz Express" at the Kitano

Duduka was just part of my CD release weekend and I’m very thankful that he asked me to return the favor: on May 25 and 26 we will be playing music from his latest album "Plays Dom Salvador" (Sunnyside Records) with this wonderful band:
Duduka Da Fonseca (drums), Billy Drews (tenor and soprano saxophones), Helio Alvez (piano) and special guest Maucha Adnet (vocals).

Looking ahead…"New York, New York" with Katharina Pütter in early June

These three events will not be happening before the beginning of June, but I thought I'd mention them in this edition already, to give my friends in Germany a little more notice:
on Wednesday, June 6 (Berlin)  - www.salonfestival.de/salon/puetterwind-2/
and Thursday, June 7 (Hannover)www.salonfestival.de/salon/puetterwind-3/

I will be presenting the project "New York, New York – a city and its neurotics" together with actress/reader Katharina Pütter for the German "Salonfestival".

On Sunday, June 10 we will also be at in Bramsche in conjunction with a Bass master class at Heiner Windelband’s "SünnenblinkMusikwerkstatt":  www.windelband.de/aktuelles/

The Workshop will be in the afternoon from 2 – 5:30 pm and the concert/reading will start at 8 pm.

Turning 50

Finally on a personal note:  I just turned half a century old on April 27 – I know, it’s hard to imagine! On the day of the event we went to our favorite Greek Restaurant around the corner:
And on May 5th, I celebrated with my family and best friends in Hamburg at an excellent Italian place outdoors right on the Alster river:
