On Monday the 16th of June 2014 saw the beginning of history in the making with the launch of the open-to-all free to enter competition to design the official flag for Exmoor.  The closing date for entries is Monday the 21st of July.

The winning design will be chosen by public vote and unveiled at a ceremony in October.  The winning Exmoor flag design will be registered with The Flag Institute, the organisation responsible for maintaining the national registry of United Kingdom flags.

The Exmoor Flag Project is financially supported by the Exmoor National Park Partnership Fund and the Exmoor Flag Project team, and is endorsed by The Exmoor Society.

The first flag design entry was received on Wednesday 18th June, just two days after the competition launched!

Exmoor Flag website to enter.

On Tuesday 17th June the Exmoor Flag Project team, along with Robin Ashburner, the UK’s leading flag and heraldry expert who lives near Exford, were invited to Dulverton Middle School by Jerry Weedon Head of the Exmoor Federation of Schools.  Robin demonstrated how certain flags including the Union flag have evolved through history, and showed examples of more modern flags for counties and areas explaining what they symbolise.
Julie Christian and Ceri Keene from the EFP, along with Robin Ashburner were then welcomed by the Art Teacher Elizabeth Johnstone to join a creative session with the year 8s.  The children had the opportunity to discuss what Exmoor meant to them personally and they began the creative process of symbolising those ideas into a flag design.
The Exmoor Flag team were also invited to host an assembly on Monday 23rd June at All Saints First School in Dulverton.  Julie Christian talked to the pupils in years 1 to 4 about our National Flag, more commonly known as the Union Jack, and what countries it represents.  The EFP team’s presentation, which also includes inspiration on the history, landscape, wildlife and colours of Exmoor is available for other schools to use.   Contact Julie Christian at for details.

The display in the lobby of All Saints First School has an array of inspirational materials including The Exmoor Magazine and the Exmoor National Park's visitor publication.
You may have heard EFP team member Edward Christian’s interview on BBC Radio Somerset with Jonathan Ray sitting in for Matt Faulkner’s Drive Time show. And David ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald interviewed Julie Christian on the BBC Radio Devon’s Drive Time Show.

Our media partners West Somerset Free Press have given the Exmoor Flag Competition some excellent coverage with a front page pre-launch story and last week the publishing of the entry form and design guidelines along with a feature of the Dulverton Middle School visit.  Our Devon media partners North Devon Gazette, along with North Devon Journal have covered the competition to ensure that both counties are fully informed about the Exmoor Flag competition.  This week the coverage continues with articles in The Mid Devon Gazette's Bampton & Brushford Edition and in The Somerset County Gazette.
The Exmoor Magazine have a feature on their website and hope to publish a story in their autumn issue.
The Exmoor Flag Project (EFP) team and friends have been out enjoying the Exmoor countryside delivering ‘flag packs’ to schools, Exmoor National Park Centres and visitor information centres and putting up posters across Greater Exmoor.  (EFP team pictured l to r: Tony Keene, Ceri Keene, Julie Christian, Edward Christian).
During our travels on launch day BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright gave the competition a “Wow” when he mentioned the Exmoor Flag Project on “The Big Show”.
The EFP team were delighted to hear of a retirement home in Devon plans to have an Exmoor/Flag talk in preparation for the residents to design their flag entries.  And of a Scout Group that are planning to enter the competition.  If you have any events planned we would love to hear from you
