EXMOOR FLAG COMPETITION NEWSLETTER No 5

The much awaited Exmoor Flag will be unveiled at a unique ceremony during the school half term holiday on Wednesday the 29th of October.
Exmoor Flag Launch Event

A dramatic day celebrating Exmoor’s new flag is planned starting with the winning flag arriving blazoned on a West Somerset Railway steam locomotive.  There will be much fanfare and flag waving as the majestic locomotive rumbles into the platform at Minehead Station around 11.40 am.  This is the first time ever a United Kingdom registered flag has been unveiled on a train!

BBC Radio Somerset will be broadcasting live during the morning from the event and ITV will be filming as part of a programme about Exmoor.

The 5 finalist’s designs were shortlisted to go through to the public vote by a panel of judges, selected from 261 competition entries. Designs came from all over the world, from community groups and schools to individuals as young as 2 and as old as 93. The much requested gallery of entries is growing daily at www.exmoorflag.co.uk/flag-entries858 members of the public voted for their favourite Exmoor Flag design, with 446 votes cast online and 412 received in the post.

Jamie Loudon (Flag A), Martin Shoots (Flag B), Kathryn Roseveare (Flag C) and Kevin Sandiford (Flag D) and Jenny Stevens (Flag E) will each receive a commemorative gift in recognition of their huge achievement of being selected from hundreds of design entries.

As well as the honour of going down in history as being the designer of the new Exmoor Flag (Registered by the Flag Institute as an official United Kingdom Flag), the winner will be presented with the very first hand-sewn Exmoor Flag, made in Exford by Robin Ashburner.  In addition they will receive a beautiful wicker hamper made especially by Exmoor Baskets & Hurdles overflowing with Exmoor produce, products, an Exmoor Magazine subscription, vouchers for shops, visitor attractions and meals out.  The prizes have all kindly been donated by local businesses keen to support Exmoor’s new flag.
