Fishing Off the Map

by Colette Newer, Washington Conference Outreach Ministries associate director

I encountered a story recently on This American Life that captured my attention. The story took place in 1980 in Damascus, Arkansas, where a nuclear missile silo was housed.

In the vividly recounted story, two technicians were preparing for routine maintenance on one of the missile’s fuel tanks. Their job was to remove a dust cap (essentially a gas cap), pump in more liquid, and complete their maintenance. But it wasn’t so cut-and-dry simple.

A socket wrench fell…spectacularly and dangerously punching a hole in the missile. Fuel began spraying out.

They had a problem. A problem they don’t know what to do about and they were panicked and terrified. They don’t know what to do so they did nothing and the situation escalated. Alarms and sirens began going off in the missile’s command center. There was confusion and miscommunication, but no solutions. And it’s about this time in the story that they used the term that caught my attention. A commander stated, “We were off the map.”

Have you ever found yourself off the map? In unfamiliar situations? Surrounded by unplanned for circumstances? You’re unprepared, uncomfortable and often downright frightened?

The disciples did.

:: THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTON

WISE Visiting South Korean Sister Schools

Several of our office staff, academic leaders, and student representatives are abroad with WISE this week in South Korea visiting sister schools! Parents of current students at AAA were able to meet with principal Peter Fackenthall; Lewis County Adventist School and principal Karen Carlton signed a new sister school agreement with Donghae Middle School; principal Carisa Carr visited Northwest Christian's sister school at Wonju Sahmyook school;  and WISE leaders Lon Gruesbeck, Lynda Kim, and Jodi Iwankiw were able to visit with the students from Youngnam Sahmyook, Buena Vista's sister school, who visited Buena Vista this past January! It's been a great week of learning, interacting, and forming an even stronger education connection!

Pomp for A Special Circumstance

What happens when you finish your business degree in accounting and the graduation ceremony happens on Sabbath? Your office colleagues throw a surprise graduation party complete with gap-and-gown, pomp and circumstance (on a banjo!), graduation program (with spontaneous speeches and on-the-spot singing of "Great is Thy Faithfulness"), and a custom-made mushroom lei (in honor of the mushroom hunter).

This is what happened for Caleb Maccarone, our junior accountant, this week! Join us in congratulating Caleb on completing his degree!
Send a Note of Congratulations to Caleb!

Camp Meeting Concert Artist Signed!

We just signed the paper work to invite and bring singer Jennifer LaMountain to the first weekend of Washington Adventist Camp Meeting! LaMountain will be the featured artist for the first Sabbath afternoon concert on June 16, at 3pm, in Rainier Auditorium! LaMountain is no stranger to the stage, having appeared on television, radio and the stage. And she is no stranger to the Pacific Northwest! We look forward to welcoming her back this June!
