Why You Don't Need To Be Afraid

by Craig Mattson, Washington Conference vice president for education

In Psalm 27 David declares that "The Lord is my light and my salvation; who shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
We live in a fear-laden world. Conflict, natural disasters, shakey political systems, crime, and sickness do not seem to scratch the surface of the fears that currently grip humanity.

David's words not only represent the great hope of Christianity, but are also an audacious declaration of our faith in a world gone crazy. Claim the Psalmist promise of peace by tuning out the gritty headlines of the world and tuning into the biblical promises of God.

A Thoughtful Response

Concerns have been circulated online about the listing of Walla Walla University Church (WWUC) on the website of Convergence, an organization whose mission does not consistently represent the beliefs and practices of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The North Pacific Union Conference (NPUC) leadership shares the following in response.

October 7: NPUC Day of Prayer

The Seventh-day Adventist Church Annual Council will be held Oct. 8–11 in Silver Spring, Md. Important discussions will be held and critical decisions may be made that will impact the governance and unity of our church.

With this important gathering in mind, North Pacific Union Conference (NPUC) leaders are calling all Northwest members to join in a Day of Prayer, Sabbath, Oct. 7. There is no formal schedule for this, no specific format that must be followed. We encourage each member, in his or her own way, wherever and whenever possible, to lift up the mission of our church, and the hearts and minds of our world church leaders in prayer. We desire God's Spirit to be the unifying presence throughout these meetings, and that our divinely-inspired mission will be enhanced, not hindered, by decisions made.

This week, we would like to feature five upcoming ministry events that reflect our desire to grow leaders for God's kingdom.

Charity Detox

Byron Dulan, our Outreach Ministries director, this week helped the Washington Conference staff dig deeper into their understanding of community services. Byron shared this 45-minute "Charity Detox" presentation by Robert Lupton that made us all reconsider what we define as "good community service."
