A Love Like No Other

By Bill Roberts, Washington Conference ministerial director

I have learned many things about love from Dr. Francis Collins. He is a brilliant man with both a PhD and an MD degree and has directed the Genome project which mapped three billion bits of human genetic code.

When he was nominated to head the National Institute of Health, he was opposed because his faith. Richard Dawkins said he was, “not a bright guy.” And yet, Collins goes to tea with Dawkins on visits to Oxford.

When Christopher Hitchens, a militant atheist who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Collins offered to help him find cutting edge treatment. Hitchens wrote columns in Vanity Fair about his journey. One “Christian” rejoiced at his pain saying, “he got cancer in the one part of his body he used for blasphemy…then comes the real fun, when he’s sent to hellfire…” In one of Hitchens last columns, he paid tribute to Collins as a “selfless Christian physician,” who visited him and offered help. He described him as, “This great humanitarian.”

Our Summer Ministries

This summer, we have a variety of summer ministries happening here in western Washington and beyond! We are excited for the opportunities of spiritual growth, making memories, finding connections with one another and growing our young Adventists.

Through Vacation Bible School programs and Sunset Lake Camp, we invite you to help nurture our growing young Adventists. Check with your local church to see when their VBS is happening and/or send a child to camp!

Many of our Washington Pathfinders are heading east to the International Oshkosh Camporee this Aug. 12-18 in Wisconsin! We encourage you to check with your local Pathfinder Club to see if they've met their fundraising goals and to pray for their safe travels. Watch a fun walk through of the Oshkosh campgrounds!

Summer is a time to make new family memories and new friends. Have a weekend full of family fun at Family Adventure Weekend this Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 (Labor Day Weekend) and find spiritual growth and new friends at the Young Adult Retreat this Aug. 16-18!

Washington Veterans Home Ministry: Bloom Where You Are Planted

Washington Veterans Home – Retsil in Port Orchard, Wash., is the largest live-in veteran service facility in Washington State with 240 beds. These veterans have served our country in various wars including the Vietnam War and World War II. One can only imagine the tragedy and trauma that many of the veterans have experienced. How could they find hope and wholeness in the final years of their lives?

The Port Orchard Church wanted to find a way to share. Members began working to develop an Adventist presence in this significant facility in their community.

Kenneth Cox Passes to His Rest at 84

Kenneth O. Cox, whose career as a Seventh-day Adventist evangelist spanned decades, continents, and time zones, passed to his rest on July 3, 2019 at the age of 84. Cox, who lived near Loma Linda, California, United States, succumbed following heart surgery.

Phillip Lynn Draper, communication director for the Arizona Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, said his fondest memory was “traveling with Kenneth and hearing his explanation of the Bible.” Along with preaching, Draper said Cox was “a natural” when visiting potential converts at their homes. “He could win people over to Christ so easily, so logically,” Draper said.
