4 Essentials for Spiritual Survival

by Bill Roberts, Washington Conference ministerial director

There are four things necessary for survival: food, water, shelter, and air.

There are also four things we need for spiritual survival and growth. We need to read scripture. Jesus said we don’t live without it. We also need to prayer. We need fellowship with other believers. And we need to share what Jesus has done and means to us.

Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous man will prosper; whoever refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” When I am involved with praying for and sharing with others it makes me thirsty for Jesus. My involvement in ministry helps me.

Let's talk!

How are you involved (or want to be involved) in ministry?

Hurricane Harvey Response

Adventists in Texas, Louisiana, and beyond are actively responding or preparing to bring in a new round of responders after Hurricane Harvey.

Wednesday evening, 50 students and faculty from Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) helped load an Adventist Community Services semi-truck headed for the Houston area with supplies (pictured above). SWAU reports their team worked along with the Lillian Fire Department to make short-order of the truck loading job!

SWAU is raising funds for Adventist Community Services to assemble Disaster Relief Kits. The goal is to raise $10,000 for 1,000 new kits. SWAU says as the items for kits are pre-approved, cash donations are most needed to fund this project.

Please consider giving at Besides monetary donations, you may also donate and ship via Amazon and Walmart. Here's a list of needed items and shipping instructions.

Boat Rescue
Dr. Jared Wood, SWAU biology professor, volunteered to rescue civilians. “Working with the fellow volunteers was a good experience. People were offering up whatever they had, even though they didn’t have much themselves,” says Wood. “There was such comradery.” Read Dr. Wood's story!

Northwest Response
Our Pacific Northwest disaster response teams are seeking to make contact with already trained ACS-Disaster Response volunteers who are available on flexible schedules to help with upcoming response needs. Please read through GleanerNow's disaster response information.

Special Offering
Adventist Churches across North America will be collecting a special "ACS Hurricane Relief" offering on September 9 to help with Hurricane Harvey responses.

Most of these funds will go to benefit the work of Adventist Community Services, serving devastated communities without regard to religion, race, or ideology - emulating the ministry of Jesus. The remainder of the offering will help Adventist churches and schools impacted by the storm.

Please share the ACS Hurricane Relief bulletin insert with your church and/or service-oriented ministry teams. Plus: track updates from Adventist Community Services.
