God's Protected Species

By Pam Scott, Washington Conference associate treasurer

One warm August night my husband and I were walking along the waterfront in Tacoma, Wash. The sun had set and the fishermen were lined up with their poles out on the pier. As we walked closer, I saw a couple of small dogfish sharks about twelve to fifteen inches long laying on their cleaning table. The fishermen use dogfish as bait for sixgill sharks which average from seven to nine feet long and present a different fishing experience for the fishermen.

When we spoke with one of the fishermen he said he would catch one of the larger sharks every night. I asked him what he did with them; Did he eat them? “No,” he said. “Sixgill sharks are a protected fish, so we release them. I just enjoy the fight!”

Continue reading to see how Pam connects her encounter with the fisherman to the conflict between God and Satan over His children.

Holy Land Tour Update

The group of 40 from western Washington is having a great time in the Holy Land following the winding paths that Jesus once walked, visiting the cave locations where the Dead Sea scrolls were found, floating in the waters of the Dead Sea, taking a boat ride out on to the Sea of Galilee, and stepping into the river that God told Gideon to have his men drink from!

In the last couple days, the group was guided by Dr. Carl Cosaert through the stories of Agrippa and Paul and explored first century ancient stairs.

"One of the things I like about Dr. Carl Cosaert’s way of leading a tour is he doesn't just focus on the building sites but also ancient sites that have been left unchanged," says Pastor Bill. "There is an emphasis on putting you close to things you can experience, like walking up ancient stairs and doing an archeology project of shifting dirt where some people in our group found pottery and other ancient things."

Pastors are enjoying their time soaking up the Biblical sites and getting the best continuing hands-on education to add depth to their sermons and personal Bible study!

Monte Saxby and his team are off to Chicago!

Monte Saxby and his team of family members hit the road on Monday to start a 2,300 mile bike ride to a teachers conference in Chicago, Illinois! The team was welcomed by a cheering crowd of supporters as they rode through Skagit and made the local news in the Skagit Valley Herald! Their journey over the next two days were spent traversing 3 passes, surviving the hot windy days, fixing a couple flat tires, and having a great time while doing it!
