A Glorious Mess

By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

What are your feelings on Monday? Some would say that Monday’s are never a good day. But this past Monday was really not a good day. Late Saturday evening and into Sunday morning, a wind storm knocked out our power and it didn’t come back on until late Monday evening. So yes, we lost stuff out of our refrigerator. But that wasn’t why it was a bad day either.

Monday was my first day back to work after the holidays. But that also wasn’t why it was a bad day. Monday was a bad day because all three of my children had to leave on Sunday and our house was suddenly very quiet and I missed the hullabaloo that is there when they are home.

In my early morning reflections on this mess that was surrounding me, I wondered if maybe that’s the way God feels about us when we are all together at His feet.

Continue reading to see how Doug reflects on family gatherings and how God still loves us in our glorious mess!

A Color Brave Pastor's Meeting

How do you facilitate a crucial conversation? You start small. Very small. You start with one-on-one conversations, expand to a larger core group, and then include a larger audience.

This model was demonstrated during Washington Conference Pastors’ Meeting on Jan. 7 where pastoral staff engaged in a conversation about race and unity.

“This is a difficult subject because racism is a spiritual stronghold and the biggest impediment to love,” acknowledges Bill Roberts, Washington Conference ministerial director.

Public speaker Erin Jones joined western Washington pastors to speak on racial equity in the church.

Jones later tweeted, "So blessed to be guest speaking today at the convening of Seventh-day Adventist pastors. One of the [western Washington] pastors just said, “To not talk about race [in church] is to stop being relevant. If we want to speak truth today, we must speak to truth to the issues of today.”

Religious Liberty Awareness Month

The Northwest Religious Liberty Association partners with the North American and International Religious Liberty Associations to defend religious freedom here and abroad.

Dedicated to protecting religious freedom, we seek to empower legislative, administrative, and judicial authorities, and the public at large, with an accurate and reasonable understanding of the First Amendment.

Championing a balanced approach in the church-state constitutional arena is becoming increasingly difficult. The goal of preventing church and state institutions from becoming excessively entangled must be balanced with safeguarding the right of individuals and institutions to freely express and practice their religious convictions without government intrusion.
