Awestruck by Our Creator

by Craig Mattson, Washington Conference vice president of education

I often try to imagine what it was like to experience a thunderstorm before the age of technology and science. Or to see a comet streak across the sky during medieval times.

The awesome power of lightening, the deep booms of the thunder, and the beautiful bright tail of the comet must have seemed totally overwhelming leaving the perceiver with a feeling of awestruck wonder.

Nature certainly has a distinct and beautiful voice, one that many in modern urban society have lost touch with. In our world today everything seems to have an description, a sense of understanding, and a definition. This characteristic of modern life can render otherwise awesome phenomena commonplace and leaving the awesome ignored.

King Solomon tells us in the very first chapter of Proverbs that the beginning of wisdom is a fear of the Lord. The word fear here is intended to communicate a sense of awe and reverence for the supremacy of God.

When was the last time you felt awestruck by something in God’s creation? I challenge you to look at the world not through the modern illusion of understanding, but through the divine lens of the God’s creation.

Take time today to see the beauty and awesomeness of the natural world around you. Take a moment to truly be still knowing that you serve a loving and supreme Lord, the Creator and Sustainer of your life and the whole of nature around you.

:: THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTON

Top Achieving Schools

Each year students in grades 3-12 participate in an assessment of their academic abilities.

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is a national standardized test that educators use to study the progress students make in key academic areas.
In Washington Conference, we recently studied a four-year average of Iowa testing results to gauge how our schools stack up against the North Pacific Union Conference overall scores as well as the national averages.

The academic growth for Adventists schools in Washington Conference is particularly evident the longer a student is in the school system. By 12th grade, our students in western Washington are outpacing their peers academically and score in the top 26 percent of schools nationally.

Your Invitation to ASI Northwest

This year the ASI Northwest convention is going to be different, but in a way I think you’ll like. We will begin with a devotional Thursday evening at 6:30 pm with our weekend speaker, Dick Duerksen, followed by an orientation for the Everett AMEN Clinic to be staffed by our ASI members and volunteers on Friday and Sunday!

The town of Everett has over 100,000 and represents a community with many needs—needs we can help fill with our time and skill. Whether you’re a healthcare worker, dental or vision professional, or a general volunteer, please plan on joining us to help serve the expected 800-1,000 patients.

Friday evening we’ll be blessed with a full program of singing and testimonies as we bring in the Sabbath in grand fashion in the Puget Sound. Elder Duerksen will again lead us on an adventure, which he’ll conclude Saturday evening.

Sabbath morning we’ll be treated to Sabbath School by Dr. John McVay, then church with Elder Doug Bing, a longtime friend and president of Washington Conference. Beautiful music will be provided throughout, and you’ll be treated to testimonies from several of our members in action.

Roll up your sleeves with me, let’s go to work for the Lord in Everett, Washington! (You do not have to be an ASI Northwest member to volunteer at the clinic or attend the weekend programming; all are invited!)

Biblical Justice & Urban Ministry

Four out of five Americans now live in the city, creating one of the greatest evangelistic challenges facing the Adventist church in America: How do we effectively share the gospel of Christ in an urbanized world?

The Urban Ministries Conference from April 13-15 in Kenmore will highlight proven principles and practices that impact the holistic needs of diverse people groups in cities. It will spotlight innovative, successful and sustainable ministries operated by Adventist churches in the urban context. Attendees will be exposed to biblical principles that should influence and inform effective ministry in our current social climate.

We suggest sending 2-3 representatives from your church so your team can take better action on future urban ministry initiatives.

Lodging is available for this ministry conference. Find lodging contact information when you click to register now.

#SafetySabbath2018

Safety Sabbath this March 24 is all about preparation and practice. It is a day set aside for churches to emphasize emergency and safety planning. It is a day to practice the plan you have prepared, and make sure the congregation is ready for emergencies. It is an opportunity for churches to learn about the risks and potential incidents they may face, and prepare themselves to navigate those incidents.

You'll find a wide variety of #SafetySabbath2018 resources online for registered participating sites.
