Assault of the Senses

by Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Have you ever noticed that when you are with a bunch of people and you open a jar and it smells bad that the first thing you do is say to your friends this smells bad? "Here, you smell it."

If we know it smells bad, why do want others to smell it? We do the same with food. We say this tastes bad and then turn to someone and say here you try it.

In fact, our senses are assaulted from all sides with all sorts of smells, sights, and sounds. The Psalmist David had something to say about this...

Providing Emotional Care in a Time of Disaster

While Washington Conference has been active in Disaster Response for many years, a class to be a certified emotional care provider hasn’t been offered here before. This unique role takes special care so the qualifications and training are more stringent than for others.

Instructor, Derrick Lea, is the associate director for Disaster Response at the North American Division and a certified instructor with International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). He also has operations experience as Deputy Chief for the Prince George’s Country Fire/EMS Department. I think you’ll appreciate the depth of experience and knowledge Derrick brings to the classroom.

You may also notice that the $60 registration fee is extremely low compared to when these classes are offered through other venues. That’s a one of the benefits of being part of a denomination that subsidizes ministry!

Back-to-Back Tragedy in Federal Way

A week before Christmas, Angela Atieno (age 34) and Janet Oyuga (age 32), dedicated caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, returned home from their respective jobs. They had recently entered a rent-to-own agreement for their home in Federal Way, Washington – a symbolic event that they had finally ‘made it’ in the U.S. Soon after moving in, their 85-year-old tenant shot Janet five times and killed her, and then shot Angela in the back. Angela barely survived.

A week after Christmas, a fire completely destroyed their home and all of their belongings. Angela is now suffering extraordinary loss and heartbreak while needing to heal. The True Vine SDA Fellowship church family is coming together to raise funds to help Angela and her family.

Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.  Lord, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells.
