Speak, Lord, for your servant hears

By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Mrs. Burbach was my elementary school teacher for grades 2-4. She was a quite spoken lady but with a quiet intensity about her. She, like many teachers, believed in memory verses.

There was one character in the Bible that she seemed to love, and I remember to this day her talks regarding the prophet Samuel. She spent time talking about the call of Samuel when he was a young person asleep at night and heard God’s voice.

One of the memory verses I still remember is in 1 Samuel 3:9 — “Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.”

But there's another important life lesson and Bible verse that I remember...

Gibbs, Goose, Kaylee & God

“I’d like you to meet Kaylee and Gibbs,” David Yeagley, known as Pastor Dave at Sunset Lake Camp, announces to campers at Monday morning line call. “Kaylee and Gibbs are here to listen to you this week if you need someone to talk with.”

Kaylee and Gibbs then greet each cabin. Kaylee Sewell is a recent social work graduate from Walla Walla University. Gibbs is a well-behaved, two-year-old russet toned golden retriever with a specific mission: to break down barriers.

“Gibbs is a good opener,” Sewell says. “Anywhere I go, Gibbs goes with me. He helps campers calm down and open up to talk. Campers will often call out, “Hi Gibbs and Goose!” (Goose is a stuffed toy that Gibbs carries around.)

Sewell is piloting a social worker role at Sunset Lake Camp. In previous times, campers primarily dealt with feelings of homesickness when they came to camp. Now, the issues are bigger. Much bigger.

Adventists Encourage Responsible Immunization

This week on July 28, new MMR immunization exemption laws for school and child care attendance went into effect in the State of Washington.

The Seventh-day Adventist church and school system encourages responsible immunization and has no faith-based reason to discourage immunization. As a church, school and healthcare system, we care about the safety, health and well being of our students, families, employees and community.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church adopted an official statement on immunizations in 2015, and you are welcome to read it below.

"The Whole Life" Health Coach Partner Training

For every 10 people you see worldwide, 9.5 have health problems and are in need of help.

What if you could do something to heal them? What if you could help without having a medical degree? What if in helping them, you could bring them to Jesus?

Meet Josh Vasquez. For the last five years, God has put a burden on his heart to heal through simple means that heal the entire person.

Join Josh on August 25 from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm in the Washington Conference Auditorium in Federal Way to learn how you can be a Health Coach Partner to share “The Whole Life.”
